Biology is the science of life Study the origins and history of life and once-living things Study the structures of living things Study how living things interact with one another Study how living things function Chapter 1, Section 1

Made up of one or more Cells Displays Organization Grows and Develops Reproduces Responds to Stimuli Requires Energy Maintains Homeostasis Adaptations Evolve over time An organism is anything that has or once had all of these characteristics Have students determine living or non-living for each of the pictures. Have students make graphic organizer for the Characteristics of Life. Either hotdog, hamburger, hamburger or short hotdog, ham, ham, ham. Chapter 1, Section 1

7 Cells All living things are made up of one or more cells
Cells are highly organized, tiny structures with thin coverings called membranes a cell is the smallest unit capable of all life functions the basic structure of the cell is the same in all organisms Euglena cell (in green) has chloroplasts and can create its own food. 8 Displays Organization
Living things also display organization, which means they are arranged in an orderly way. Specialized cells are organized into groups that work together called tissues. Tissues are organized into organs. Organ systems work together to support an organism. Chapter 1, Section 1

9 Growth & Development Growth results in the addition of mass to an organism and, in many organisms, the formation of new cells and new structures. Development is the process of natural changes that take place during the life of an organism Click on movie to show radish seeds growing Chapter 1, Section 1

10 Reproduction Reproduction is the process by which organisms make more of their own kind form one generation to the next without reproduction SPECIES could not continue A species is a group of organisms that can breed with one another and produce fertile offspring. Chapter 1, Section 1

11 Responsiveness Anything that is part of the internal or external environment and causes some sort of reaction by the organism is called a stimulus. The reaction to a stimulus is a response Chapter 1, Section 1

12 Metabolism (Requires Energy)
living organisms perform many different chemical reactions in order to obtain and use energy to run the processes of life energy is needed to grow, move, and process information metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions carried out in an organism almost all energy used by living organisms is captured from sunlight energy flows from sunlight to plants, from plants to plant-eating organisms, from plant-eaters to meat- eaters Chapter 1, Section 1

13 Maintains Homeostasis
all organisms must maintain a stable internal environment in order to function properly organisms respond to changes in their external environment, adjusting their processes accordingly homeostasis is the maintenance of this internal environment in spite of external changes Chapter 1, Section 1

14 Adaptations An adaptation is any inherited characteristic that results from changes to a species over time. change in inherited traits of a species over time is called evolution organisms with genes that allow them to better meet nature’s challenges are more likely to survive this is Darwin’s theory of natural selection Chapter 1, Section 1
