Rise Up, O Men of God
7
Have done with lesser things Give heart and mind And soul and strength
Rise up O men of God Have done with lesser things Give heart and mind And soul and strength To serve the King of kings
8
His kingdom tarries long Bring in the day of brotherhood
Rise up O men of God His kingdom tarries long Bring in the day of brotherhood And end the night of wrong
9
The church for you doth wait Her strength unequal to her task
Rise up O men of God The church for you doth wait Her strength unequal to her task Rise up and make her great
10
Lift high the cross of Christ Tread where His feet have trod
As brothers of the Son of man Rise up O men of God
11
O Worship The King
12
O worship the King All glorious above
And gratefully sing His wonderful love
13
Our Shield and Defender The Ancient of Days
Pavilioned in splendor And girded with praise
14
O tell of His might O sing of His grace Whose robe is the light Whose canopy space
15
The deep thunderclouds form On the wings of the storm
His chariots of wrath The deep thunderclouds form And dark is His path On the wings of the storm
16
Thy bountiful care What tongue can recite It breathes in the air It shines in the light
17
It streams from the hills It descends to the plain
And sweetly distills In the dew and the rain
18
Frail children of dust And feeble as frail In Thee do we trust Nor find Thee to fail
19
Thy mercies how tender How firm to the end Our Maker Defender Redeemer and Friend

Thy will be done on earth
Our Father, Which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth As it is in heaven.
23
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
Give us this day Our daily bread, And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
24
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory
Forever, forever, forever, and forever. Amen.
26
Psalm 2 (ESV) Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 2The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
27
Psalm 2 (ESV) 3“Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”
28
Psalm 2 (ESV) 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
29
Psalm 2 (ESV) 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
30
Psalm 2 (ESV) 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”
31
Psalm 2 (ESV) 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
32
Psalm 2 (ESV) 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
33
Sermon in a Sentence To receive and enjoy God’s blessing: 1) we must recognize the world is opposed to God and His Messiah (1–3), 2) we must be encouraged by God’s perspective on the world's rebellion (4–6), 3) we must understand the Father has given all nations to His Son (7–9), and 4) we must kiss God’s Son and take refuge in Him (10–12).
34
1. We must recognize the world is opposed to God and His Messiah (1–3)
Kiss the Son! 1. We must recognize the world is opposed to God and His Messiah (1–3)
35
Kiss the Son! The nations rage against the idea that blessing comes only through the blessed man. They want to make their own path.
36
rage (1) = to be restless and conspire to change the terms
Kiss the Son! rage (1) = to be restless and conspire to change the terms
37
Kiss the Son! The Hebrew word translated “plot” in v. 1 is the same as the word translated “meditate” in 1:2.
38
Kiss the Son! People cannot find lasting happiness because they are opposed to the very God who can give it.
39
Kiss the Son! vain (1) - Human plans and efforts are futile in the face of God’s will.
40
Kiss the Son! “The initial ‘why’ sets the tone of its approach, one of astonishment at the senseless rejection of God’s rule and ruler” (Kinder, 66).
41
The world is in a state of hostile opposition to God.
Kiss the Son! The world is in a state of hostile opposition to God.
42
Kiss the Son! They want to be released from the requirements of God’s righteousness. “It is a battle for freedom which they are entering, but a freedom that is opposed to God.” (Keil and Delitzsch)
43
Kiss the Son! 2. We must be encouraged by God’s perspective on the world’s rebellion (4–6).
44
Kiss the Son! God is not laughing at the consequences of sin but at the audacity of their arrogance. Kidner writes, “The only laughing matter is the arrogance itself -- not the suffering it will cost before it ends” (67).
45
Kiss the Son! From the earth’s perspective, the plight of those who are looking for God to send a Son to fix what sin broke may seem hopeless, but from heaven’s perspective, it is as sure as God’s Word.
46
wrath = nostril fury = burning anger
Kiss the Son! wrath = nostril fury = burning anger
47
Kiss the Son! When God sets His king on His Holy Hill, it is an irreversible installation. Zion is the place where God dwells and rules the nations.
48
3. We must believe the Father has given all nations to His Son (7–9).
Kiss the Son! 3. We must believe the Father has given all nations to His Son (7–9).
49
Kiss the Son! Up to now, the Psalmist has been speaking, but in verse 7, the Son speaks.
50
Kiss the Son! Dads: your desire to give good things to your children is a reminder of our Heavenly Father’s desire to give all things to His Son.
51
The greatest sin is the sin of unbelief in the Son of God.
Kiss the Son! The greatest sin is the sin of unbelief in the Son of God.
52
Kiss the Son! God has issued a decree (7) specifically concerning the honor due His Son, and the decree will not fail.
53
One day, everyone will pay attention to God’s Son.
Kiss the Son! One day, everyone will pay attention to God’s Son.
54
Kiss the Son! Here’s why we believe so strongly in working to get the gospel to all types of people: because the Lord has said to His Son – “ask me for the nations, ask me for the ends of the earth” (8).
55
Kiss the Son! The guarantee of our success is as good as the Heavenly Father’s love for His only begotten Son.
56
Kiss the Son! Our mission does not just go from sea-to-shining-sea; it goes from pole-to-pole. It does not just go to Americans but also to Africans, not only to Salemites but also to Sudanese, not just to Roanokers but to war-torn refugees. Jesus will get the nations as His heritage (inheritance), and the ends of the earth as His possession (8), and He is sending us out with an urgent gospel message because a day is coming when it will be too late.
57
4. We must kiss God’s Son and take refuge in Him (10-12).
Kiss the Son! 4. We must kiss God’s Son and take refuge in Him (10-12).
58
“The gospel is only good news if it gets there in time.” – Carl Henry
Kiss the Son! “The gospel is only good news if it gets there in time.” – Carl Henry
59
Kiss the Son! Why does God warn the nations in Psalm 2? Because He wants them to be wise and heed the warning. Indeed, that is what He commands them to do!
60
Kiss the Son! They world is seeking hope in subversion, but as Kidner writes, “their only hope . . .is submission.”
61
Kiss the Son! “This fiery picture is needed alongside that of the one who is ‘slow to anger’” (69). God is slow to anger yes, but, like a good Father, He never abandons His jealous love for His perfect Son.
62
Kiss the Son! So what is the solution? How can we be wise, warned, serve God with fear and rejoice with trembling?
63
Kiss the Son! We must kiss God’s Son!
64
Lead On O King Eternal
65
The day of march has come Henceforth in fields of conquest
Lead on, O King Eternal The day of march has come Henceforth in fields of conquest Thy tents shall be our home Through days of preparation Thy grace has made us strong And now, O King Eternal We lift our battle song
66
Till sin’s fierce war shall cease And holiness shall whisper
Lead on, O King Eternal Till sin’s fierce war shall cease And holiness shall whisper The sweet amen of peace For not with swords’ loud clashing Or roll of stirring drums With deeds of love and mercy The heavenly kingdom comes
67
We follow, not with fears For gladness breaks like morning
Lead on, O King Eternal We follow, not with fears For gladness breaks like morning Where’er Thy face appears Thy cross is lifted o’er us We journey in its light The crown awaits the conquest Lead on, O God of might
