In this case, the artery (a) was punctured at two sites (arrows) with a combination of Er:YAG laser pretreatment and needle puncturing. The two ends of a piece of suture were advanced, one into each opening. Arrowhead: loop created by the suture after its placement. (B) Catheterization of a vein with a custom-made glass tube. The glass tube (arrow) was advanced into the venous lumen through an opening (arrowhead) created with a bent 30-gauge needle. (C) Catheterization of an artery with a polyimide tube. After an opening was created at the arterial bifurcation (arrowhead), the tube was advanced into the vascular lumen. a, artery; ON, optic nerve head; v, vein.
