1 Listening to Jesus How have you been listening? What has He been saying? What have you been doing?

2 The Church in ‘Acts’tion Acts 2:1-13 Pastor David Kobelin

3 What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
What’s All This Talk About Tongues?

4 Acts 2:1-13 New King James Version (NKJV) 2 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord[a] in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

5 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

6 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?

7 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”

8 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?” 13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

9 What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE IMMERSION OF THE BELIEVER INTO GOD.

10 Acts 1:5, 8 New King James Version (NKJV) 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me[a] in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

11 Luke 24:49 New King James Version (NKJV)
49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem[a] until you are endued with power from on high.”

12 Mark 1:10 New King James Version (NKJV)
10 And immediately, coming up from[a] the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove.

13 Acts 10:38 New King James Version (NKJV)
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.

14 Acts 2:38 New King James Version (NKJV)
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

15 THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A GIFT.
Acts 2:38 New King James Version (NKJV) 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

16 Acts 2:39 New King James Version (NKJV)
39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

17 What’s All This Talk About Tongues?
Acts 10:45-46 New King James Version (NKJV) 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.

18 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

19 Acts 19:5-6 New King James Version (NKJV)
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

20 18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;
1 Corinthians 14:18 New King James Version (NKJV) 18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

21 THERE ARE FOUR FUNCTIONS OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES
An initial evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit — the sign

22 Mark 16:17 New King James Version (NKJV)
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

23 Individual personal edification (Personal private prayer language)
1 Corinthians 14:4 New King James Version (NKJV) 4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

24 Jude 20 New King James Version (NKJV)
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

25 1 Corinthians 14:13-19 New King James Version (NKJV)
Corporate edification (when accompanied by interpretation). 1 Corinthians 14:13-19 New King James Version (NKJV) 13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

26 15 What is the conclusion then
15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your

27 giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say
giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

28 19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

29 1 Corinthians 14:27-28 New King James Version (NKJV)
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.

30 Corporate individual worship
1 Corinthians 14:39-40 New King James Version (NKJV) 39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

31 WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED TODAY?
