6 A Bit about The Arc Oldest and Largest Human Services Agency for People with IDD and their Families In 48 states plus DC (not in Vermont & Nevada) Over 650 State and Local Chapters Have a policy team of 5 professionals and over 100 years of combined policy and advocacy experience One of very few organizations that advocates for policy change, develops and implements programs through our own network of chapters.

7 Now… What About Transition?
Education Employment Housing Need to note that we appreciate that there are three transitions – first is tradition when the school bus stops, second is when post HS school ends and really get employed, and third is when they move into independent housing (fourth may be if they live at home with aging parent care-givers)

Proactive - Experienced – Well Respected Disability Advocacy Network (DAN) Works Collaboratively with many other Disability organizations – a founding member of CCD Educational Resources (accessible to all) Technical Assistance to “translate” Federal Policy Chapters Connect with our Staff Policy based on annually updated legislative goals (new goals to be available and published at this year’s DPS – developed in collaboration with our chapters and partners including DPS co-convening partners including AAIDD, AUCD, NACDD, UCP, and SABE

Introduction to transition planning Why is secondary transition important? What should be included in the transition process? How can students and their families participate in the transition process? What happens when students reach the “age of majority” in their state? What is a summary of performance? Where can I get more information?

Collaborate with Leading Researchers at UCED’s Current Hiring Relationship with SAP, Baymont (Wyndham), Walmart, and others Work collaboratively with chapters Sourcing Candidates Upgrade Hiring Best Practices Connect Chapters to VR Resources Technical Assistance for local chapters of The Arc We are written into grants being worked on at U Illinois, U Mass Boston and other UCED’s Providing info for families, for chapters, for agencies (including DD Councils) as well as for future planning (another reason to see CFP)

Deciding Where to Live Getting Started Exploring Housing and Residential Options With family In a home you own In a home or apartment you rent In someone else’s home (often called “shared living”) In housing owned by a service provider, such as a group home. Funding Housing Webinars to educate and provide additional resources

All chapters provide advocacy Some provide direct services and supports Some provide or can offer direct advocacy resources Someone to accompany you at IEP meetings Have an onsite employment program Advise independent living options in your community Some have residential programs or have a relationship with housing providers All provide resources about local/state resources State Chapters (in 39 states) manage statewide advocacy

Depth and Breadth of Federation of Chapters Advocacy and Services Close Relationship with The Arc’s national office Opportunities to connect with other families Chapters help provide promising practices We work and learn Bottom up from our chapters to the national office Top down providing policy, programs and technical assistance although the diagnosis may be different the umbrella under which we all need protection, and the raison d’etre of The Arc will be there to promote and protect you and your families Chapters are our Research and Development arm – on the ground providing much needed feedback for us that is the ultimate bottom up reality check
