3 EXTRACTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES
CANADIAN SHIELD EXTRACTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES

4 Learning Target: I can explain the extraction of natural resources by comparing and contrasting its effects on the Canadian Shield. Essential Question: How does the extraction of natural resources such as minerals and trees affect the Canadian Shield?

5 Most of the Eastern half of Canada is the Canadian Shield.

6 The Canadian Shield contains one of Canada’s most valuable resources: minerals.
Includes: gold, silver, copper, nickel, diamonds and more.

7 These minerals are far underground:
How does Canada extract them? Mines. (The mining industry employs around 1.5 million people.)

8 Diavik Diamond Mine--Northwest Territories, Canada

9 Mining has several effects on the environment:
Blasting and digging with heavy machinery damages land and ruins the environment. Mining releases harmful chemicals into the air which causes acid rain. Slag (leftover rock) is dumped wherever it is convenient.

11 Mining in Canada

12 Vast forests cover almost half the land in Canada.

13 Canada is leading producer of timber products: lumber, paper, plywood and pulp.
This natural resource is important to Canada’s economy, providing jobs and profit to Canada.

14 Most timber companies cut all the trees in a given area, leaving large treeless gaps in the forest (called “clear-cutting”). Citizens are concerned that clear cutting is destroying the forests.

15 Clear-cutting has several effects on the environment:
Reduces water quality. Causes erosion. Kills animals’ habitats. Heavy machinery leaves the forest floor compacted and makes it hard for new growth to start.

Include the causes as shown. Include 1 drawing for extraction of minerals and 1 drawing for extraction of trees and color. Define these words on the poster. extraction mining clear-cutting Human environment interaction. 5. Assess with rubric.
