2 Who is CROSS? • Founded in 1949 by James H. Cross
CROSS Manufacturing Incorporated produces one of the most extensive hydraulic component lines on the market today —all proudly made in the USA. The product line includes: welded and tie rod cylinders, directional flow and pressure control valves, gear pumps and motors, filters, accumulators, gear boxes, adapters and manifolds. CROSS distributes worldwide and supplies hydraulic components for many markets: agricultural, mobile, material handling, logging, utility, construction, mining and forestry. • Founded in 1949 by James H. Cross • Privately (family) owned and operated • 220 Employees • Two other manufacturing plants are within an 80 mile radius of main cylinder plant in Lewis. Pumps and motors are manufactured in Hays, KS and adapters and manifolds in Pratt, KS. Hays and Pratt also function as satellite plants for the Lewis facility, manufacturing many cylinder components. Our corporate office in Overland Park, KS. • ISO certified since 1998.

14 CROSS Reference NOTES:
Cross SBA valves have built-in load check & come with a conversion plug. To convert the std. SBA2 valve for power beyond order kit #1V0249 (#12 SAE) or #1V0208 (3/4" NPT) (see BA Parts list) To convert to closed center function order kit #1V R0035 no relief plug (IV2015 kit) or order the -CC model (already converted with tighter spool fit) (see BA Parts list) CROSS SBA valve come standard with end inlet, and outlet ports (optional top ports may be ordered) Gresen SP valve have no option for a conversion plug. Anytime Gresen has a 'X' in the part number (ie. SPXTE-4-HP) the valve comes with a conversion plug - like the Cross SBA series The 'TE' in the part number stands for 'optional top & end outlet' (the valve comes standard end outlet ports) CROSS Reference NOTES

38 MOST COMMONLY ASKED VALVE QUESTIONS:

39 HOW DO I HOOK UP THE VALVE?
Inlet and outlet are marked on the valve as well as diagrammed on the box. A and B (C, D, E and F if applicable) ports go to the cylinder ports.

40 WHAT VALVE SHOULD I USE FOR LIFTING?
spring poppet For safety, a valve with a load check is necessary in order that the load does not drop before it begins to raise again when you are shifting out of the neutral position. CROSS BA, AD, SS and DV valves have load checks. (The load check is a spring loaded poppet which prevents the oil from backflowing until enough pressure is created to raise the load.)

41 WHAT VALVE DO I NEED FOR A LOADER?
see Full Line catalog p. 6 The most popular valve is the SBAF2 which has a float position on the first spool allowing the oil to circulate to permit the bucket to ride the contours of the ground. The second spool is for a two way cylinder and is spring centered to neutral. Another option is the SBA22 which is spring centered to neutral on both spools but features no float. (The valves are also available in closed center models SBAF2-CC or SBA22-CC or with joystick SBAF2J.)

42 I HAVE A JOHN DEERE. (or any other closed center system)
CAN I USE A STANDARD VALVE? All SBA valves are convertible to closed center by installing a closed center plug(#1V0206) and no relief plug (#1R0035) as shown in literature shipped with the valve. (also see Sales Manual for full explanation) Valves may also be ordered already converted to closed center - such as the SBA2-CC featuring a tighter spool fit. (AD/SA valves are also convertible) Closed center faq Quick Refresher Open center Closed center (no relief in valve) Constant flow in neutral No flow in neutral No pressure in neutral Constant (Stand-by) pressure in neutral

43 HOW DO I HOOK UP SEVERAL VALVES IN SERIES?
Replace the conversion plug on the outlet side of the SBA valve with a power beyond sleeve (#1V0208). Connect this line to the inlet of the second valve. Run a tank line from the outlet of the first valve (which has priority) back to the reservoir.

44 Noted on Valve Tech. Sheet in White
HOW DO I CHANGE THE RELIEF OR BYPASS SETTING ON A VALVE? Always use a pressure gauge in the inlet to assure precise results. An SBA valve may be adjusted by turning the adjustment screw under the acorn nut on the handle end of the valve. Clockwise will increase pressure. The Converta or CA relief is a ball and spring type and is shim adjustable. Shims in the relief cap may be added or removed to increase or decrease pressure. The spring in the Converta is rated to 2250. Do not exceed the recommended psi for the valve! Relief setting Noted on Valve Tech. Sheet in White Master Catalog

45 1V0294 WHAT DOES THE #1V0294 DETENT KIT DO?
This manual detent fits the SBA,SBC, C series or Converta and is field installable. The valve handle (and spool) stays wherever it is placed until moved by the operator. Used frequently for motor applications. Never recommended for logsplitters.

46 CAN I PUT A FLOAT OPTION ON A STANDARD VALVE. (See P
CAN I PUT A FLOAT OPTION ON A STANDARD VALVE? (See P.5 of BA parts list) Float Float No, the end of the spool as well as the lands are different so a standard valve will not accept a float detent. Float is a standard option on the SBAF2 and SBAF22. Float option should always be nearest the valve inlet. (Spools are matched to the individual valve bodies so changing a valve spool in the field is not feasible.)

47 Pressure release CAN I PUT A PRESSURE KICKOUT ON A STANDARD VALVE?
Pressure kickout or automatic return to neutral requires a special internal machining which must be done at the factory when the valve is manufactured. ( It is a standard feature on the SCD2E - logsplitter valve. It may also be ordered on the B series.)

48 CAN I USE A STANDARD VALVE FOR A SINGLE ACTING CYLINDER?
Not recommended. If you plug a port on a standard SBA valve, the pump oil has no place to go as you are exhausting or lowering the cylinder. Consequently, it goes over the relief and overheats the system. Valves with spools for single acting applications may be special ordered from the factory. (EXAMPLE: BA13AG3EA0 #133259) (The Converta is convertible to single acting by replacing the long plug on the outlet side with the short SAE plug in the box. Directions and parts sheets are included with this valve.)

49 HOW DO I IDENTIFY A VALVE?
identification HOW DO I IDENTIFY A VALVE? The CROSS computer stock number is stamped in the shaded area on the handle end of the valve body on recent valves. BA, BC, CA, CD & SS SD & VS4 without solenoid Solenoid or Pilot end caps VS2, AD, SQV, & DCV stamped With last 4 digits on machined Surfaces or plugs On older valves, the Z casting number is on the back which would tell you which series, but individual functions would have to be described. (ex. IZ0046, 1Z0202 etc.)

50 Valve Advantages • Ground, plated and polished steel alloy spools are select fit to the individual valve body for minimum leakage and smooth operation • Rugged cast iron body construction • Built-in differential relief valves in AD, BA & DV series. Ball and spring type in C series. • AD, BA, DV & SS valve feature integral load checks for lifting applications as well as spool metering notches for feathering. • 100% testing for external and internal leakage as well as spool bind • Versatility of design and field kits permit conversion from open center to closed center and power beyond applications as well as to a variety of detent options
