2. Civil Rights
The American Civil War ended in 1865, and African Americans were given “equal rights” in the next few years. However, anyone looking at America at the end of WWII knew that this statement was completely false. African Americans were segregated from the rest of society. Over the twenty years following WWII, the Civil Rights Movement achieved a great deal of success.

3. WHY? What were the most important factors that led to this success?

4. Thesis
For Feb 17/20, you are to develop a thesis that explains why the Civil rights Movement was successful after almost 100 years of failure. The information from the next two classes will provide the information you need to complete this assignment.

Understand the difficulties faced in the march for equal rights and the integration of US society
Understand the conflicts between the federal government and state governments
Know the important events and people that shaped the beginnings of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s.

6. Questions to Answer
How does the Federal Government help to end segregation in the US and bring Civil Rights to African American citizens?
Why does the process take so long- both from the perspective of human nature and from the perspective of how change was implemented?
Why are two court cases- Brown versus the Board of Education and Plessy versus Ferguson-important in the fight for equality?
Why are Emmett Till, Rosa Parks and the Little Rock 9 important in the fight for equality?

11. Trial Trial took place just 22 days after the murder.
On September 23 the all-male, all-white jury acquitted both defendants. Deliberations took merely 67 minutes; one juror said, "If we hadn't stopped to drink pop, it wouldn't have taken us too long."[20] The hasty acquittal outraged people throughout the United States and Europe and energized the nascent Civil Rights Movement
