New Hampshire was one of the original 13 colonies and was founded in 1629
It was founded by John Mason and was named after the english county of Hampshire
Mason intended it to be a fishing colony that exported barrels of salted fish back to england

Although fishing grounds were further north than expected new hampshire found success from ship building
The tall white pines indigenous to the area were perfect for building masts on sailing ships
They also profited from excellent hardwoods

Due to expectation of a huge fish industry most of the first settlers were englishmen who were mariners( sailors ) sent to aid the trappers and fishermen
The few carpenters and shipbuilders that were there from the beginning soon multiplied due to the industry's success
New hampshire was governed as a royal colony

The ship represents the ships settlers came to America on. The wreath around the ship is an ancient symbol of fame, honor, and victory. The nine stars within the wreath show that New Hampshire was the ninth state to join the Union.

Captain John Mason
He was born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, England.
John Mason came from a wealthy family and received an excellent education at Peterhouse College, Cambridge
During his early life news of the discoveries in the New World inspired him.
John Mason was well educated in typical subjects of the time including navigation, astronomy, cartography, mathematics and seamanship
John Guy had visited Newfoundland and petitioned the British government for permission to establish a colony. John Guy set sail from Bristol with a small group of colonists, landed at Newfoundland in August 1610 and founded a settlement.
John Guy's colony in Newfoundland started the era of the proprietary governors. The colonization was a commercial enterprise sanctioned by the Crown via charter issued by James I to the London and Bristol Company, a joint-stock company
John Mason was appointed as governor of Newfoundland by the investors in the the London and Bristol Company in 1615
