1 WP9-SuperB in TIARA M. Biagini, INFN-LNF

2 SuperB SuperB is an asymmetric e+e- B-Factory with the goal to reach unprecedented luminosity: 1036 cm-2 s-1 SuperB aims to become an EU infrastructure, however it is not an R&D infrastructure  needs to find topics that can fit into TIARA objectives Since a critical upgrade of (or the R&D for upgrading) a R&D infrastructure could be included in TIARA, but not the R&D projects that will be carried out using the infrastructure, we are proposing to upgrade one R&D test facility in Frascati and to build a new one in Orsay

3 Objectives A critical part of SuperB is the injector system which needs to deliver very intense bunches of positrons and polarized electrons at very high rates due to the low beam lifetimes in the ring caused by the SuperB large luminosity Two topics have been selected which are related to this sub-system, one to be developed at LNF-Frascati, the other at LAL-Orsay These two items represent state-of-the-art research. Neither LNF nor LAL possess today all the infrastructures needed to perform these critical R&D tasks for SuperB. However, the necessary upgrades are very well in line with the longer term R&D plans of these two laboratories and can fit the TIARA objectives Both proposed Tasks would help building a net of European R&D infrastructures

4 Task 1 – Upgrade of the SPARC test facility at LNF for C-band tests
An important topic within the injector system which will need significant R&D for SuperB in the future is the study of a high performance C-band linac which could deliver the 7 GeV beam with the required properties in a very cost effective manner This topic represents state-of-the-art research, since there are not such test facilities at the moment in Europe The proposal is to design the upgrade the present SPARC test facility and realize a unique infrastructure in order to be able to carry out in the future the necessary R&D both for SuperB and the FEL SPARX project. Others EU Laboratories could also profit from this test facility Partners: INFN-LNF Rome University La Sapienza, “Dipartimento di Energetica” PSI (to be confirmed) CERN ? To be contacted

5 Task 2 – Setup of a new infrastructure at LAL for polarized e- source studies
Another important topic for the SuperB injection system is the test of the polarized electrons source, needed to provide fast injection of polarized, intense e- bunches This item needs to be studied and an infrastructure for R&D tests can be built at LAL-Orsay To perform the necessary R&D on the electron polarized source it is mandatory to dispose of a power station that feeds the RF structures. This will allow setting up a new infrastructure for future R&D program for the SuperB injector. The foreseen integration with the acquisition of a laser and of an electron gun are also planned but beyond the scope of TIARA It has to be stressed that this equipment is fully in line with LAL medium term plan concerning the projects PHIN and ThomX that will require the study and the implementation of very stable RF power sources to avoid RF phase rotation with consequent beam energy jitter Partners: CNRS-LAL-Orsay INFN-LNF SLAC (non EU associate)

6 Task 2 – Alternative - Setup of a new infrastructure at LAL for e+ source studies
It is important for SuperB to have an efficient positron production possibly at lower energy (100 MeV) to save on Linac length This item needs to be studied and an infrastructure for R&D tests can be built at LAL-Orsay To perform the necessary R&D we need to have L-band and S-band structures and dedicated positron target Partners: CNRS-LAL-Orsay INFN-LNF SLAC (non EU associated)

7 Other topics which may be relevant to TIARA in other WPs
Use DAFNE as an infrastructure for testing future R&D (WP3) Organize accelerator courses at Rome University and LNF (WP5) Use DAFNE as an infrastructure for “training” future accelerator physicists about the operation of a collider (WP5) Identify infrastructures with common characteristics, which can collaborate on future R&D: SuperB has quite a few points in common with the Damping Rings of the Linear Collider and CLIC. If test facilities for any of these are proposed by another WP it would be important to include SuperB also

8 List of deputy and participant contacts that have been contacted
