1 Students will understand cells and other characteristics of life.
Standard S7L2 Students will understand cells and other characteristics of life.

2 What are the characteristics of life?
Essential Question What are the characteristics of life?

3 All living things are called organisms.

4 Living things are organized.
Cells are the smallest unit of an organism that carries on life functions. Some organisms are composed of one cell. Others are made of many cells. Each cell functions to sustain itself. Each cell contains hereditary material.

5 Living Things Respond. Living things interact with their surroundings.
Anything that causes some change in an organism is a stimulus. The reaction to a stimulus is a response. Homeostasis is an organisms ability to keep the proper conditions inside no matter what is going on outside of the organism. Homeostasis is a trait of all organisms.

6 Living Things Need Energy
Living things take in and use energy. Most energy used by organisms comes directly or indirectly from the Sun.

7 Living Things Grow Organisms change as they grow.
All of these changes are called development. In one-celled organisms, growth is due to a change in the size of the cell. In multi-celled organisms, growth results in an increase in the number of cells.

8 Living Things Reproduce
All organisms reproduce. Without reproduction, living things would not exist to replace those individuals that die.

9 What do living things need?
A Place to Live/Shelter Raw Materials: Water Proteins Fats Sugars

10 Spontaneous Generation
Biogenesis The theory that living things come only from other living things Spontaneous Generation The idea that living things come from nonliving things

12 2nd/5th/6th Characteristics of Life Chart
You will be given ONE sheet of construction paper after you have created a rough draft. In each section, label the indicator of life in the thin box. In the large box below, draw something that represents that indicator and write 1 fact about that characteristic. These drawings should be NEAT, COLORFUL, and as LARGE as possible. This should be a BEST EFFORT WORK!

13 1st Life on Planet X? You and your crew were offered the mission of exploring a newly discovered planet, Planet X. You could not refuse. In your daily log, you write concerning the terrain (land forms) and anything else you find. While surveying the landscape, you do discover something. You think it is life! Each day you document each of the indicators that point toward this new discovery as an organism. (All indicators MUST BE documented.) In addition, you bring back a colored picture of your new discovery. This picture is made with new technology and is BIG, BOLD, BRIGHT, and BEAUTIFUL! It is the best picture you have ever seen. The log entries should be in ink.
