2 What Is an Earthquake ? A sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.

3 What Happens in an Earthquake?
Buildings then sway and topple, and fires may start as gas and electricity lines are ripped apart.

4 Why does Japan have so many earthquakes ?
Japan has so many earthquakes because there are so many different tectonic plates (layers of the earth's crust) underneath it and each plate keeps rubbing with the other plates.
