1 Making Real Math Connections: Unit Price Activity
Directions For Activity I love this activity! It provides students a fun real world connection to math. I bring in lots of empty boxed items from the grocery store, empty soda or drink bottles, empty medicine boxes, or any other item that would normally go into my recycle bin. Sometimes I also ask my students to contribute items. I label each item with a price and then give each group 5 items. Student s love handling the items and using real examples. Make sure students can identify the different types of units. Each group will use this worksheet to organize their information. They write what item they are working with, the cost, the rate in fraction form, and then calculate the unit price. I allow my students to use a calculator with this activity. It is a great activity for students to practice rounding to the nearest hundredth. You might want to complete an example with them first as a reminder on how to round using a calculator- some of the decimals can be very long. If you have similar items students can compare which is a better buy. Have a few extra items and a few extra worksheets set aside for early finishers. Have fun, Math Central ©Math Central
