What will the Transition year science programme include?
Links with STEM Project Work Project Competitions Biology Chemistry Physics It will aim to examine topics of general interest which are outside the junior cycle science syllabus and may also serve as a taster for those considering a science subject as a leaving certificate option. Project competitions: SciFest, BT Young Scientist. Reel life science competitions.,Other science based project competitions,possibly link to the science gallery. The Transition Year Construction Studies programme
This course is essentially the study of buildings and the built environment. Examining all parts of a build from the planning stage to building completion. Planning. Foundations. Floors. Walls. Roofs. Stairs Doors Windows. Services.

DCG Problem solving and creative thinking skills are developed through the analysis and solution of both 2 and 3 dimensional graphics. Graphics and designs are communicated using freehand sketching skills, traditional draughting equipment and Computer Aided Drawing.

TY – Work Experience and Community Service – possible format
Work Experience: Two X two week placements Community Services: One week placement e.g. local organisation e.g. Paired Reading Project/ Nursing home / Animal Shelters Student secures placement Alternatives – 2 X 2 week placement ( 1st before Midterm Oct and 2nd for 2 weeks following Midterm Feb) Work Experience involves Daytime Business hours Work Experience is assessed via feedback calls and Diary – equivalent up to 50 credits of overall 600 credits for TY Student needs to write a Letter of Introduction – needs Insurance cover

TY – Extra-curricular Activity – The Gaisce – The President’s Award
Challenge award years of age) in different areas It involves: Community Involvement (1 hr pw for 15 weeks) Personal Skills ( 1 hour pw for 26 weeks) Physical recreation (1 hour pw for 12 weeks) An adventurous activity (e.g. walk klms over 2 days/ km if cycling) The chance of doing the bronze medal award ! Physical recreation means picking up a new sporting skill or continuing one you already have Personal Skills means learning how to plan an instrument or learning computers or doing lifesaving or first aid courses Community involvement means getting involved with the caring of the disadvantaged, helping young people or assisting the elderly Adventurous activity means getting involved in the planning and carrying out of an adventure journey e.g. Wicklow Way Walk or Climbing Croagh Patrick

What’s the next step? Each student will be interviewed by the TY panel (co-ordinator, Year Head, Deputy Principal and/or Principal) to assess their suitability for the programme Teachers’ views will be sought to see if T.Y. is suitable for applicants. Students’ attendance and discipline records will be considered very carefully. Students will be called to interview. A decision will be reached, parents and students will be informed on whether they are accepted or not If more candidates apply than positions available, the decision on whom to accept will be decided by the Principal and TY co-ordinator.
