1 NJHS Guidelines

2 Community service is an integral part of active membership in NJHS and is required for members to remain in good standing. Fall semester – Between acceptance of membership and December 31, members must complete a minimum of six hours of APPROVED community service. Spring semester – Between January 1 and April 30, 2015, members must complete a minimum of six hours of APPROVED community service. * * Anyone participating in the trip to Disney must have completed at least three of the hour prior to a specified date before the trip.

3 Service hours may be performed on an individual basis.
A list of approved agencies and opportunities is provided in the Community Service Opportunities link of this website.  Only service work done for organizations on the approved list will be counted.  Work done for organizations that aren't approved will not count toward society membership requirements. Adult supervision will not be provided by NJHS sponsors unless it is designated as an NJHS group service project. Service hours may be performed with our group.  We will offer group service projects periodically throughout the year.  This information will be discussed at meetings and will be available on this website.  Please consult the Community Service Opportunities link of this website to keep up with new information that will be posted as it becomes available.

4 Community service opportunities
We are open to suggestions and ideas for community service from students and their parents.  If you know of a service opportunity that you would like to have approved for our members, please try to submit the information a month ahead of time.  We will need to check into it in order to approve it, post it to the website, and make the information available to all members.  In order to be considered for approval, the opportunity should meet the following parameters: It should be available to all interested members of the Society.  It should take place in a safe environment where there is adult supervision. It should be work that benefits the community at large.

5 Other Specifications If a member earns more than six hours in the fall semester, these cannot be transferred or carried forward to meet service requirements for the spring semester. To be counted as service hours for National Junior Honor Society, the approved service work must be performed specifically to meet the community service requirements of the Society.  If you do community service for another organization, that time cannot be counted as work done for NJHS membership. If you commit to a group service project, you must participate for the entire duration of the project to receive credit.  Partial credit will not be given.

6 Receiving credit for service work
A Proof of Service form must be turned in to a Society sponsor at the NJHS meeting that follows the service.  It must be fully completed.  It must be signed by an adult in charge of the function. (It will not be accepted if it has been signed by a parent or acquaintance.)  The form will not be accepted if a student's name has been written in place of another name or if student's name has been whited out and another written in its place.  Any student submitting a falsified Proof of Service form will be subject to dismissal from the Honor Society.

7 Service Opportunities
Community service that is performed for agencies/events on the NJHS website list may be used to satisfy requirements for membership in the Society, provided applicable guidelines are followed. A Proof of Service form must be completed and submitted to your faculty advisor to receive credit for the work. This list will be updated frequently and will be linked to detailed information about the service opportunity. We are open to suggestions from students and parents to expand our list of service opportunities. Parent volunteers – If you’re willing to chaperone an event, please let us know!
