1 Weekly Objectives Students will understand and appreciate an epic poem. Students will determine the meaning of unknown words by using context clues. Students will understand an epic poem. Students will utilize various reading strategies to monitor comprehension.  The students will write for a variety of purposes and audiences using the Standard English conventions of grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

4 Grammar Practice The simple subject is the main word or group of words in the complete subject. Ex. A dog with this pedigree is usually nervous. Complete subject: A dog with his pedigree; simple subject: dog

5 Grammar Practice How to find the subject of a sentence?
It’s easier to locate the simple subject if you pick the verb first. Ex. The shutters on that house are painted green. Ask yourself who or what are painted?

6 DOL-Incorrect Odysseus visits hades, hears the sirens, and then passing scylla. Scylla lived on the most highest peak any one could of imagined.

7 DOL- Correct Odysseus visits Hades, hears the Sirens, and then passes Scylla. Scylla lived on the highest peak anyone could have imagined.

8 Quick Write Imagine Odysseus in our society today-as a guest in your home. For example, how would you treat him? What would you tell him about the dangers and the pleasures of the world? Suggest some jobs you think he might be suited for and a place you think he might want to live. You must include two of your vocabulary words from the previous books.
