English SATs Reading Test, Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Test

2 Reading Test – Monday 8th May
1 hour to read and answer the questions 3 texts progressing in difficulty Children can choose how they approach the test. They can read all texts first then answer questions, or read one text at a time answering questions after each one. We encourage the later.

3 Reading test Questions will involve:- Retrieval of information
Inference Deduction Evaluation Questions carry 1, 2 or 3 marks Trends from last year’s test were: greater emphasis on fictional texts; moods and feelings justified; word meanings understood; task clarity – ask for a word not a phrase (example)

6 Some examples… Explain what makes the writer feel scared. Use what you have read in the whole article. Think about: • what the writer is doing • what he thinks might happen. 3 marks

7 Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Test – Tuesday 9th May
Paper 1 requires short answers, either identifying the correct answer or correcting/completing or rewriting tasks to answer. It will cover areas such as using conjunctions (because, despite, however, etc), using pronouns (I/me) correctly capitalising the correct words in a sentence and explaining why putting the correct punctuation into a given sentence writing sentences that illustrate two different meanings of the same word (such as ‘present’) identifying the verb/noun/adjective/clause in a sentence and using plurals correctly.

12 Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Test – Tuesday 10th May
Paper 2 is a spelling test, where children will have to spell words dictated by the examiner (presented within sentences). For example:- John turned on the television to watch his favourite cartoon.

13 Writing Assessment This is no longer a tested area of English
Judgement will be made through teacher assessment Unaided writing pieces and other independent writing tasks will be used by the teacher (Mrs Wilson) to assess ability Handwriting and Spelling fluency will be part of the assessment criteria
