History, essential oil use dates back to BCE.

It is highly probable that just as pain killers are available today there were an assortment of oils for medicinal purposes. To refer to them generally is typical of linguistic usage.

Will pray and will anoint are in the aorist tense. Does this indicate it will always be immediate?
NO. The aorist gives a snapshot of the event without respect to any process.
