2 Statistics – what is it? Individuals – are the objects described by a set of data; people/animals/etc. Variables – any characteristic of an individual; it can take different values for different individuals

4 Types of Variables Categorical Variable – records which group or category an individual belongs to Single, senior, yr olds Quantitative Variable – takes numerical values for which arithmetic operations such as adding and averaging make sense Salary, weight, age
