- Failed 2010 application in integrated primary and secondary manufacture 2011 call. Any industrial interest? What areas (not the same)? Use this afternoon session to define? Innovative Medicines Initiative looking at green (bio)synthesis methods Outline application made. EU10m over 4 yrs. Consortium partners: 13 including iPRD, CoEBio3, York, Durham, Rostock, Antwerp, ACIB, Stuttgart, CatSci, Reaxa…. EU FP7 outline proposal being made to Precision Manufacture of Nanoparticles (Limerick leading iPRD as partner) Missed TSB ICT Call (Predictive Solubility project) however new TSB call in high value manufacture for Q Any member interest? Use this afternoon session to define?

Now have a Parr 2-stage CSTR flow hydrogenator Multi- gas/liquid capability eg H2 and CO 2*80ml stirred cascade pots capable of kg product Up to 70bar operating pressure Substrate and gas flow controlled interface Pink = PFR Green+Pink = 2 CSTR’s Red box = 1 CSTR

Hydrogen borrowing (racemic alcohol to homochiral amine) CIDT green process to (R) or (S)-2-chloropropionic acid Removing amine contamination from solid NaCl waste stream Flow electrochemical reduction of benzaldehyde Scale-Up aspects of natural product extraction and purification DTC Projects (Just Starting – 6 month) Slow flow hetereogeneous (NiEnCat) catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles Dispersion measurement and modelling – in-line UV measurement Formation of intra-particulate reagents – encapsulated solid reagents MChem / MEng projects (1 year part-time) Build variable residence time unit using jacketed static mixers Build continuous liquid-liquid extraction unit for litre-scale operation Distillation scale-up – measure effect of cold spots Properties of weak solid networks – preventing clogging!

8 Green process to (R) or (S)-2-chloropropionic acid
(S)-2-CPA = 1000’s tpa Current processes all involve resolution Target solvent-free, no waste process Achieved in 10 week project: outline “engineered” CIDT process 20% de solvent free salt break by steam distillation racemisation with NaCl and 18[C]6 solvent free

9 Dynamic catalyst system
Aim to test dynamic catalyst system: one-pot catalytic dehydrogenation and asymmetric reduction by hydrogen borrowing Achieved in 10 week project: telescoped process Reaction rates for each step determined with chiral and achiral catalyst
