Homework Page 347 Understanding Key Ideas #10-18 Lesson 9 Env Sci

Character Education CO2 is a major by product of burning organic material, it is needed for keeping the Earth habitable, you need a good career to feel worthwhile Lesson 9 Env Sci

Objectives List the major sources of CO2 emissions on Earth
Explain the effects of increased CO2 in the atmosphere Lesson 9 Env Sci

Terms of Chapter The statement “Cool summers, cold winters with lots of snow—about 75 cm of precipitation each year” describes Climate.  Populations of tiny, shrimp-like animals known as zooplankton may be reduced by global warming.  As a result of the destruction of stratospheric ozone, single-celled organisms called phytoplankton, that live near the ocean’s surface, can be killed by increased UV radiation. The development of an ozone hole over the poles is a result of human activities and begins when molecular chlorine from chlorofluorocarbons is released into the atmosphere and collects on polar stratospheric clouds. Lesson 9 Env Sci

Terms continued The green house effect is a process by which the atmosphere traps heat that is radiated from Earth’s surface.  A predicted increase in Earth’s average temperature caused by human activities and the subsequent release of gases such as carbon dioxide is known as global warming.  If polar ice masses melt as a result of global warming, sea levels will rise.  Stratospheric ozone is destroyed by chlorine atoms released from CFCs.  Damage to DNA in cells of living organisms is caused by exposure to UV radiation.  The statement “It’s hot and sunny today—the temperature is 88ºF at 11 a.m.” describes climate.
