Home Corporations Supreme’s Priorities: Supreme’s Concerns
Home Corporations are not the Knights of Columbus Clearly separate Knights of Columbus and its subordinate entities (e.g. Councils) from operation of halls. Protect the KC image, reputation and programs Supreme’s Concerns Rental of facilities to inappropriate uses that damage the KC brand False representation by renter to facility manager about nature of event.

Home Corporations Handbook for Councils Using Home Corporation Facilities – Officers Desk Reference Examples of inappropriate uses – damage to KC image Model agreements between Councils (subordinate units) and Home Corporations Terms of use of facility by KC Council Signage clearly naming ownership of facility, separate from the Council that meets there Home Corporation indemnify and hold harmless subordinate units from all liabilities of the Home Corporation Insurance coverage requirements Rental agreement – stronger requirements on renters to reduce likelihood of inappropriate events being hosted Charitable Dissolution Agreement (if facility is sold) – ensures portion of sale will go to charitable purposes.

Comments Dallas “7 hours” with attorneys from Supreme Advocate’s office John A. Marrella – Supreme Advocate Operations of volunteer organization w/ business arms e.g. Home Corporations can = disagreements about money, control issues, distractions, and challenges Reality of child abuse requires we get training and document that we are “doing the right thing” Doing things by the book/following Supreme requirements “are not the main point” Do those things so we can focus on our purposes: serving the church, growing in our faith, supporting each other and our families, improving the our communities So: don’t let “busy-ness” of being leaders distract or discourage you. Keep our service mission always in front. It will energize and inspire you and our members.

Discussion Mike Kassouf – State Advocate Mississippi
