1 Materials per student- blank sheet of copy paper, scissors, ruler; yellow, orange, and red colored pencils (optional) *Note- on slide 3, we’ll say the Earth is 6,000 km deep for the sake of round numbers, even though it’s a few hundred more km than that. When scaling them (still on slide #3), you don’t need to measure all the depths with a ruler to be exact; in fact, please don’t let students try (it’ll take too long, wasting time on something that’s not that important today). As the ppt shows, get your 0 km at the top and 6,000 km at the bottom, then about halfway between will be the 3,000 km. The others you’ll get close by guestimating. No coloring done on this graphic organizer, but it wouldn’t be difficult to have students shade from yellow to orange to red going from bottom to top (either on the outside or inside of the flaps). That would reinforce even more that in both cases we’re talking about the same earth.

2 Now cut across that line (top sheet only !)
Draw a line 2 ½ cm down

3 Earth’s Layers Physical layers-
based on physical properties (solid or liquid, how waves move though) Compositional layers- based on what they’re made of km This is a close-up view of the upper half

4 Now cut all dotted lines (top sheet only !)
Compositional layers- based on what they’re made of Earth’s Layers Physical layers- based on physical properties (solid or liquid, how waves move though) km Crust Lithosphere Asthenosphere 1,000 Mantle Mesosphere 2,000 Now cut all dotted lines (top sheet only !) 3,000 Compositional layers Crust 0-35 km Mantle 35-3,000 km Core 3,000 – 6,000 km Outer core 4,000 Core Physical layers Lithosphere 0-60 km Asthenosphere km Mesosphere ,000 km Outer core 3,000 – 5,000 km Inner core 5,000 – 6,000 km 5,000 Inner core 6,000

5 You finish all the rest-2 facts beneath each.
Compositional layers- based on what they’re made of Earth’s Layers Physical layers- based on physical properties (solid or liquid, how waves move though) km -2 types: oceanic & continental -mostly made of oxygen, silicon & aluminum Lithosphere Asthenosphere 2 facts about the crust -hot, very slow moving rock… - … Mesosphere 2 facts about the mantle Outer core 4,000 You finish all the rest-2 facts beneath each. Core 5,000 Inner core 6,000
