12 Scene 1 Lady MB is caught sleepwalking by the doctor and a gentlewoman. She repeatedly tries to “wash” a spot of blood off her hands “Come out damned spot!…Why should we be scared? No one will put the guilt on us.” (5.1.37) The doctor tells the gentlewoman that her conscience is burdened and people with guilty minds confess their secrets to their pillows as they sleep, but he doesn’t know why. 13 Scene 2 & 3 A group of Scottish thanes discuss the military situation: the English army, led by Malcolm, approaches and the Scottish army and will meet them at Birnam Wood. At this point Macbeth is boasting proudly that he has nothing to fear from the English army or Malcolm. However, when he calls his servant Seyton, who confirms that an army of ten thousand is approaching, Macbeth begins to doubt himself.

14 Scene 4 & 5 Malcolm reveals his plan to use tree branches to disguise the approach of the army to Dunsinane Castle. After a woman’s cry is heard, Macbeth finds out that the queens is dead. A messenger enters with new that the trees of Birnam Wood are coming towards Dunsinane. Realizing that the prophesies are coming true, he decides that the best he can do it die in battle.

15 Scenes 6 & 7 Malcolm orders the English soldiers to throw down their branches, and show themselves as they are. Macbeth strikes all those around him and kills Old Siward’s son. However on the other side of the battle, Macbeth’s army surrendered the castle.

16 Scene 8 When Macduff finally encounters Macbeth, Macbeth is not scared and insists that he is invincible because of the witches’ prophecy. However Macduff tells Macbeth that he was not of woman born, but rather “from his mother’s womb” (5.8.15). Macbeth suddenly fears for his life, but says he will die fighting not surrendering and they exit fighting After Malcolm and Siward capture the castle, Macduff emerges with Macbeth’s head in his hand and proclaims Malcolm king of Scotland. Malcolm declares that all his thanes will be made earls, call home their exiled friends , and invites them all to see him crowned at Scone.

Consider his intentions in the beginning of the play and his intentions in the end, his reasoning for all of his murders, and his reaction to his wife’s death. How does this reflect his changing personality? Who drove Macbeth to do what he did, or was it really fate? How is this parallel to another story we’ve read in class? to another story we've read
