1 God’s Essence Omnipresence
We have already seen that God is Sovereign. He rules the heavens and the earth; His Word is law and must be obeyed. Disobeying God is sin. God is also Righteous. In His perfect goodness, He cannot stand sin; in His Justice, God must punish sin. Who took the punishment for us and was judged for all our sin? (Jesus Christ) None of us deserved this. We are only saved by God’s grace. Next we have learned that God is Love and by grace shared his Perfect Love for us by sending His Perfect Son, Jesus Christ to take and bear the sins of all mankind on the Cross. God has always existed and will always exist, He has no beginning or end because God is Eternal Life. God is all knowing, as He knows everything, the end from the beginning because He is Omniscient. Omnipresent is the next attribute of God’s Essence we will learn about. Omnipresent basically means that God is always present everywhere. You can’t hide from God. God's Essence

2 God’s Essence Omnipresence
Biblical Definition OMNIPRESENCE Being present everywhere at once; one of God’s unique attributes. One of the characteristics of created objects is that they are limited by space. An object or person can occupy only one place at a time. Because God created the heavens and the earth (Gen. 1:1) and through His Son continually sustains all that is (Heb. 1:3), He is present to the whole of creation and to its parts. King David realized that there was nowhere he could go to escape God’s presence (Ps. 139:7–12), and no conditions such as darkness could hide him from God. Even though God is present everywhere, He is not perceived everywhere. He can be fully present and yet hidden from the eyes of creatures, or He can make His presence felt either in blessing or judgment. See God. Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary (p. 1221). Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers. OMNIPRESENCE* Aspect of God’s infinity in which he transcends the limitations of space and is present in all places at all times. Elwell, W. A., & Comfort, P. W. (2001). In Tyndale Bible dictionary (p. 976). Wheaton, IL These are the Biblical definition of Omnipresent. Being present everywhere at once, present in all places at all times. God's Essence

3 God’s Essence Omnipresence
God is Omnipresent, Which Means He is Everywhere 1 Kings 8:27 (NASB95) 27“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built! Heaven is God’s Throne and The Earth is His Footstool Isaiah 66:1 (NASB95) 1Thus says the Lord, “Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. Where then is a house you could build for Me? And where is a place that I may rest? Man Cannot Escape The Presence of God Psalm 139:3a (NASB95) 3You scrutinize my path and my lying down, Psalm 139:7–10 (NASB95) 7Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. 9If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. These are OT verses that state that God is everywhere at all times. In Isa. 66:1 state that his throne is in Heaven and that earth is his footstool. Man cannot escape the presence of God. God's Essence

4 God’s Essence Omnipresence
In The Old Testament, God Was Among and With His People Exodus 25:8 (NASB95) 8“Let them construct a sanctuary for Me, that I may dwell among them. Exodus 29:45 (NASB95) 45“I will dwell among the sons of Israel and will be their God. Exodus 33:14 (NASB95) 14And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” Leviticus 26:12 (NASB95) 12‘I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. These verses show that God was among (dwells, present with and walks) with His People, Israel. God's Essence

5 The Believer Can Never be Separated From God’s Love or Presence
God’s Essence Omnipresence Today, In The Church Age, God The Holy Spirit Indwells Every Believer John 14:16–17 (NASB95) 16“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (God The Holy Spirit), that He may be with you forever; 17that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. The Believer Can Never be Separated From God’s Love or Presence Romans 8:35,38,39 (NASB95) 35Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. These verses state that in the Church age (from Pentecost forward) (Acts 2:1-4a), that when a person believes in Jesus that God the Holy Spirit indwell us, is present with us. Jesus told his disciples that after He is resurrected that He, Jesus would sent believers the Holy Spirit that would indwell them. Paul tells us in Romans 8:35,38 and 39 that nothing can separate us from God’s love or presence. God's Essence

6 4aAnd they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
God’s Essence Omnipresence At The Day of Pentecost, Believers Were Then Indwelled With The Holy Spirit Acts 2:1–4a (NASB95) 1When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4aAnd they were all filled with the Holy Spirit Acts 2:1ff tells us that on the day of Pentecost (about days after Jesus ascension into heaven) that believers received the Holy Spirit . The HS indwelled them. From that day years ago and forward, people who believe, receive the Holy Spirit that dwells in them. God the Holy Spirit is present in believers. (Omnipresent). Pentecost (feast of weeks) is one of the Jewish holidays and is 50 days after the Passover. God's Essence

10 God’s Essence Omnipresence The Omnipresence of God Memory Verses
Jeremiah 23:23–24 (NASB95) 23“Am I a God who is near,” declares the Lord, “And not a God far off? 24“Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord. Memory Verses Matthew 28:20b (NASB95) 20band lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Proverbs 15:3 (NASB95) 3The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Watching the evil and the good. Jeremiah 23:23-24 tells us that God is near us where we can’t hide from him and that He fills the Heavens and Earth. Matthew 28:20b and Proverbs 15:3 are your memory verses that tell us of God’s presence, Omnipresence. God's Essence

11 The Promise of God’s Presence
God’s Essence Omnipresence The Promise of God’s Presence Genesis 28:15 (NASB95) 15“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Exodus 33:14 (NASB95) 14And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” Joshua 1:9 (NASB95) 9“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Matthew 18:20 (NASB95) 20“For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” Hebrews 13:5b (NASB95) 5bHe Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” By application, these verses tell us that God is always with us, He will always go with us wherever we go, He is always in our midst and will never desert us and leave us. God's Essence

12 The Results of God’s Omnipresence
God’s Essence Omnipresence The Results of God’s Omnipresence Psalm 4:8 (NASB95) 8In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety. Jeremiah 16:17 (NASB95) 17“For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, nor is their iniquity (sin) concealed from My eyes. Proverbs 15:3 (NASB95) 3The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Watching the evil and the good. Hebrews 4:13 (NASB95) 13And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. The results of God’s omnipresence is stated in these verses. We should have peace knowing that God is always with us on our bad days as well as our good days. We can’t hide from God because he is always with us. God's Essence

13 The Reality of God’s Presence The Reality of God’s Presence in Prayer
God’s Essence Omnipresence The Reality of God’s Presence Acts 17:27 (NASB95) 27that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; James 4:8 (NASB95) 8Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. The Reality of God’s Presence in Prayer Hebrews 4:16 (NASB95) 16Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. These verses tell us that God is near us and will draw and come near to us when we come near to God. How can we come near to God? In prayer, Hebrews 4:16. We must be in fellowship before we pray (1John1:9) Stopped here on Sunday 11/23/14 God's Essence

14 Jacob and His Brother Esau Are Born
God’s Essence Omnipresence Jacob and His Brother Esau Are Born Genesis 25:22–26a (NASB95) 22But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. 23The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.” 24When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25Now the first came forth red, all over like a hairy garment; and they named him Esau. 26aAfterward his brother came forth with his hand holding on to Esau’s heel, This is the story of Jacob starting with his birth. Isaac was his father. Esau was Jacob’s older twin brother, Esau was born first. The Lord told their mother, Rebekah that the younger one, Jacob would rule over the older Esau. We will see why on the next page. Back in the OT times, the first born male was usually the most important of the children and would receive most of the inheritance of the family. This is not the case with Esau and Jacob as we will see why on the next page. You are right that the number 3 does relate to the Trinity, it is a number of completion, Jonah in the belly of the large fish for three days and nights, Jesus in the heart of the earth for three days and nights, He arose after three days. Three witnesses to accuse someone, three gifts from the wise men at Jesus’s birth (gold, frankincense and myrrh), Peter denied Christ three times before the crucifixion, When Jesus was crucified from 12 noon to 3pm (for 3 hours) there was total darkness in the land when Jesus was bearing the sins of all humanity. Paul was blind three days after meeting Christ on the Damascus road, Paul was shipwrecked three times, he was beaten 3 times, and stoned three times. I have printed out verses in the NT where the word three is used. It is found 86 times in 78 verses. God's Essence

15 Jacob (Positive) Loves The Lord And Esau (Negative) Does Not
God’s Essence Omnipresence Jacob (Positive) Loves The Lord And Esau (Negative) Does Not Genesis 25:33–34 (NASB95) 33And Jacob said, “First swear to me”; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. Romans 9:13 (NASB95) 13Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” Hebrews 12:16–17 (NASB95) 16that there be no immoral or godless person like Esau (unbeliever), who sold his own birthright for a single meal. 17For you know that even afterwards, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears. We see in these verses that Jacob is positive (a believer and loves God) and that his brother Esau is negative (an unbeliever who does not love God). We see in Genesis 25:33-34 that Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew. As a result of this the blessings as the first born was taken from Esau the unbeliever and given to his younger brother, Jacob the believer. We see in God’s Omniscience, He knew that Jacob would be a believer and love Him, and that Esau would be an unbeliever and not love Him. A believer is positive and an unbeliever is negative. 16 Jacob Leaves Home To Find a Wife
God’s Essence Omnipresence Jacob Leaves Home To Find a Wife Genesis 28:1–4, 11 (NASB95) 1So Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and charged him, and said to him, “You shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. 2“Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother. . 3“May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples 4“May He also give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your descendants with you, that you may possess the land of your sojournings, which God gave to Abraham.” 11He came to a certain place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and put it under his head, and lay down in that place. In Genesis 28:1-4 we see that when it was time for Jacob to take a wife, his father, Isaac, told him not to get married to any of the women where they lived in Canaan, because these people are negative, unbelievers and do not love God. God knows this because of His Omnipresence as he is everywhere all the time. His father told him to go to where his relatives lived and to take a wife there because they were believers. Jacob was blessed by his father, Isaac, which was the blessing that should have been for the firstborn Esau. He asked for God to give Jacob the blessing of Abraham to posses the land. In verse 11, we see that Jacob came to a place to bed down for the night. God's Essence

17 The Omnipresent (Ever Present) God
God’s Essence Omnipresence The Omnipresent (Ever Present) God Jacob Has A Dream Genesis 28:12–17 (NASB95) 12He had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it to you and to your descendants. 14“Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” In Genesis 28:12-17, we see that Jacob had a dream where he saw a ladder from the earth into heaven, with angels of God going up and down. The Lord of God stood at the top of the ladder. He is told that his descendants would be like the dust of the earth, very many and in his descendants all the families of the earth will be blessed. This is done by Jesus which is a descendant of Jacob. As seen on the next page. God said that He is with Jacob and will be with him wherever he goes and will not leave him. Jacob said that surely the Lord was in this place and he did not know it. This showed Jacob that God is Omnipresent and will not leave him. Jacob believed this. God's Essence

This chart shows how the statement that God said to Jacob, that “in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed” Gen. 28:14b. All the families of the earth will be blessed by Jesus Christ, if they believe in him as their Savior and become believers. In God’s Omniscience, He told Jacob this approximately 2000 years before the birth of Jesus. God's Essence

21 God’s Essence Omnipresence
The Story of Jonah The Prophet God Sends Jonah to Nineveh Jonah 1:1–2 (NASB95) 1The word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying, 2“Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me.” Jonah Instead of Obeying God, Tries to Flee From God Jonah 1:3 (NASB95) 3But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. Jonah was a prophet of Israel from 786 BC to 747 BC. This was about 800 years before Jesus’s ministry. Nineveh was a great city in Assyria which is today in modern Iraq. In fact, your uncle Bill was there when he was deployed the second time to Iraq. In Jonah 1:1-2 was see that God spoke to Jonah and told him to go to Nineveh and to “cry against” or warn the people there that God was going to destroy them because of their evil and wicked ways. In God’s omniscience and omnipresence He see all of this. Because of His Righteousness, and Justice attributes, He will Judge the whole city. In verse 3, we see that Jonah, disobeys God and tries to flee from Him going to Joppa, a seaport on the western coast of Israel. He wanted to flee from God’s Presence and to go to Tarshish, which is in Spain about 2,500 miles from Joppa. He gets into a ship and starts sailing for Tarshish. Where Jonah lived in Samaria in the northern kingdom of Israel to Nineveh is a month or more travel time. (About 550 miles away). God's Essence

God’s Essence Omnipresence The Story of Jonah The Prophet This map shows where Nineveh was and where Tarshish was. Tarshish is on the southern part of Spain. Joppa is west of Jerusalem on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Jonah wanted to really take a long journey by sea to try to get away from God. God's Essence

23 God’s Essence Omnipresence
The Story of Jonah The Prophet God Sent a Great Storm Jonah 1:4–5 (NASB95) 4The Lord hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up. 5Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried to his god, and they threw the cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep. The Crew of The Ship Asked Jonah What They Should Do Jonah 1:10–12 (NASB95) 10Then the men became extremely frightened and they said to him, “How could you do this?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them. 11So they said to him, “What should we do to you that the sea may become calm for us?”—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. 12He said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, for I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you.” In Jonah 1:4-5 we see that the Lord, God causes a great wind to blow, which made a great storm, so severe that the boat that Jonah was in was about to break up due to the waves. The crew of the ship threw cargo over the side to lighten the load to help the ship from breaking up and sinking but Jonah was sound asleep in hull of the ship. We see here and in other places in the Bible that God controls the weather. In Jonah 1:10-12 we see that the sailors found out from Jonah that God was mad at him for disobeying God’s order to go to Nineveh and caused the storm because he was fleeing from the Lord. Jonah told them if they would throw him overboard, that the storm would become calm. Jonah was willing to (die) other than obeying God and go to Nineveh. You will see that Jonah could not escape from God’s presence and neither can we as God is Omnipresent or everywhere all of the time. God was punishing Jonah for his disobedience for not going to Nineveh. We will see later why Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh. Stopped here on Sun. 12/7/14 God's Essence

24 God’s Essence Omnipresence
The Story of Jonah The Prophet The Crew of The Ship Threw Jonah Into The Sea Jonah 1:13–15 (NASB95) 13However, the men rowed desperately to return to land but they could not, for the sea was becoming even stormier against them. 14Then they called on the Lord and said, “We earnestly pray, O Lord, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life and do not put innocent blood on us; for You, O Lord, have done as You have pleased.” 15So they picked up Jonah, threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. God Appointed a Great Fish to Swallow Jonah Jonah 1:17 (NASB95) 17And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights. Jonah 1:13-15 states that the seamen tried to row to land, but the wind was becoming stronger and they couldn’t make it to the shore. The sailors prayed to the Lord, God that they would not perish on account of Jonah’s death. They then threw Jonah into the sea, and immediately the sea quieted down. In verse 17, we see that God appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah. He was in the stomach of the fish for three days and three nights. God's Essence

God’s Essence Omnipresence The Story of Jonah The Prophet This is an artist representation of Jonah being swallowed by the great fish. We don’t know what kind of a fish it was. It could have been a goliath grouper, it could have been a whale or some kind of large fish that doesn’t exist today. God's Essence

26 God’s Essence Omnipresence
The Story of Jonah The Prophet Jonah Prayed to God and God Heard His Prayer Jonah 2:1,2,7,9 (NASB95) 1Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, 2and he said, “I called out of my distress to the Lord, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. 7“While I was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. 8“Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, 9But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the Lord.” We see in Jonah 2:1,2, 7and 9 that Jonah prayed to the Lord, God from the stomach of the fish, God heard his voice and his prayer. He prayed that he would have salvation (be delivered) from this fish and that would come from the Lord. Salvation (deliverance) is from the Lord, God. It must have been very dark and smelly in the fish’s stomach. In verse 10, we see that the Lord, God commanded the fish and it vomited or spit up Jonah on the day land. We see that God is present, omnipresent through this whole ordeal and that He protected Jonah and did not let him die. Also we see that God (Sovereign) can command animals to do various things. We see this when the animals entered the ark in the time of Noah, Genesis 7:16. We see that even in the belly of the fish, God was present with Jonah. God is omnipresent, everywhere at the same time. God Commanded The Fish to Spit Jonah Onto Dry Land Jonah 2:10 (NASB95) 10Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. God's Essence

The Story of Jonah The Prophet God Speaks to Jonah Again Jonah 3:1–2 (NASB95) 1Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2“Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim (announce) to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.” This Time Jonah Obeys God’s Command Jonah 3:3–4 (NASB95) 3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days’ walk. 4Then Jonah began to go through the city one day’s walk; and he cried out and said, “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” We see in Jonah 3:1-2 the Lord, God speaks to Jonah a second time and commands him to go to Nineveh and to proclaim, or tell the people of Nineveh what the Lord is going to do. In verses 3 and 4, we see that Jonah obeyed God’s command and went to Nineveh and walked through the city telling the people that lived there that in 40 days, God would overthrow or destroy the city for their wicked and sinful deeds. 30 God’s Essence Omnipresence
The Story of Jonah The Prophet The People in Nineveh Repented And Turned Away From Their Evil Deeds Jonah 3:5–6 (NASB95) 5Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them. 6When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ashes. Nineveh is Spared Destruction by God Jonah 3:10 (NASB95) 10When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it. Jonah Sulks (Pouts) And is Angry Jonah 4:1 (NASB95) 1But it greatly displeased Jonah and he became angry. Jonah 3:5-6 tell us that the people of Nineveh believed God and repented (changed their minds) and turned away from their wicked and sinful deeds. Even the King (ruler of the city/country) repented and turned away from doing wicked and sinful deeds. Sackcloth and ashes was a sign or symbol of mourning used in the OT times. We see in verse 10, that when God saw (Omnipresent) their deeds, that they had stopped doing their wicked, sinful deeds, God then decided that He would not destroy the town and all that was in it. Jonah 4:1 states that Jonah was greatly displeased (upset) and he was very angry because God was not going to destroy the city of Nineveh. Why was Jonah displeased and angry because God had changed his mine about destroying Nineveh? The next page explains why. God's Essence

31 God’s Essence Omnipresence
The Story of Jonah The Prophet Why Was Jonah Angry? Jonah 4:2 (NASB95) 2He prayed to the Lord and said, “Please Lord, was not this what I said while I was still in my own country? Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents (changes His Mind) concerning calamity. Jonah Leaves The City Hoping That God Would Change His Mine Jonah 4:5 (NASB95) 5Then Jonah went out from the city and sat east of it. There he made a shelter for himself and sat under it in the shade until he could see what would happen in the city. God Had a Plant to Grow Over Him For Shade From The Heat Jonah 4:6 (NASB95) 6So the Lord God appointed a plant and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. And Jonah was extremely happy about the plant. In Jonah 4:2 we see why Jonah was angry. Jonah prayed to the Lord, God and told him that he knew that God would forgive the people of Nineveh if they repented and turned from their evil deeds. He knew this because he knew “You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, and one who relents (change His mind) concerning calamity if people turn from their evil deeds. This is the reason that Jonah tried to flee from God so he would not have to proclaim (tell) to the people of Nineveh that God would destroy them within 40 days because of their evil deeds. Jonah knew that the people might change their evil ways and not be destroyed by God. Jonah hated the people of Nineveh because they killed, imprisoned and exiled his people, Israel (2 Kings 18:11-12). They were a very ruthless people. In verses 5 we see that Jonah leaves the city, made a shelter and sat down to see if God would destroy the city or not hoping that He would destroy the city. God then appointed (made) a plant grow over Jonah to shade him from discomfort. Jonah was very happy about the plant giving him shade and comfort. God's Essence

32 The Story of Jonah The Prophet Jonah’s Last Lesson On What God is Like
God’s Essence Omnipresence The Story of Jonah The Prophet Jonah’s Last Lesson On What God is Like Jonah 4:7–9 (NASB95) 7But God appointed a worm when dawn came the next day and it attacked the plant and it withered. 8When the sun came up God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah’s head so that he became faint and begged with all his soul to die, saying, “Death is better to me than life.” 9Then God said to Jonah, “Do you have good reason to be angry about the plant?” And he said, “I have good reason to be angry, even to death.” Jonah 4:10–11 (NASB95) 10Then the Lord said, “You had compassion (sympathy, concern) on the plant for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which came up overnight and perished overnight. 11“Should I not have compassion (sympathy, concern) on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know the difference between their right and left hand, as well as many animals?” In Jonah 4:7-9, we see that God appointed a worm to come the next day and it attacked the plant and the plant died and withered. Then we see that God appointed a scorching, hot east wind and the sun beat down on Jonah. We see that God is testing Jonah. Jonah got very hot and angry that the plant had died, so much so that he wanted to die himself. We see in Jonah 4:10-11 that God did not kill Jonah. God said to Jonah that he had compassion or concern about the plant that shaded him but when it died he was very angry, he was hot, and still displeased because the people in Nineveh were saved from being destroyed. Jonah had no compassion, concern or sympathy for all the people and all of the animals in Nineveh. God made all the people and animals in Nineveh and also made the plant. God had compassion for the people and changed his mind about destroying them because they turned from their wickedness and believed God. Jonah was very selfish and out of fellowship for most if not all of this story. He cared more for his own well being and the plant then all the men, women and children in Nineveh including the animals. Some think the 120,000 persons who do not “know the difference between their right and left hand” is referring to children who had not yet reached the age of accountability. Therefore counting all the adults, there was probably in excess of 600,000 people in Nineveh. God's Essence

33 The Story of Jonah The Prophet
God’s Essence Omnipresence The Story of Jonah The Prophet This is an artist’s representation of Jonah, in his misery, hot because the plant had died, and because God had not destroyed Nineveh. We see from the story, that God never left Jonah (Omnipresent), even when he was out of fellowship. By application, God will never leave us even on our bad days and when we are out of fellowship. We should try to maximize our time in fellowship with God. The story of Jonah tells us that we can not run away and hide from God because he is Omnipresent. God's Essence

34 God’s Essence Omnipresence
The Story of Jonah The Prophet We Know That The Story of Jonah is True Because it Is God’s Word Matthew 12:39–41 (NASB95) 39But He (Jesus) answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet; 40for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41“The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. Some people say that the story of Jonah (three days and three night in the belly of the sea monster) is just a story and not true. They can’t believe it. We know it is a true story because it is God’s Word. God the Son, Jesus mentioned this story in Matthew 12: He mentioned that like Jonah was three days and night in the belly of the sea monster—that also the Son of Man, Jesus will be three days and three night in the heart of the earth (hades) after the resurrection. We know that God can’t lie (Titus 1:2, Hebrews 6:18). Jesus is God the Son, so he can’t lie either. We will study this in another attribute of God which is His attribute of veracity (truthfulness).
