1 UITF MPS system requirements

2 UITF MPS – what will it protect?
Protect the ¼ CM Maintain vacuum in the beamline, no burn-throughs Protect our viewers Protect our magnets Protect the experiment, like HDIce

3 UITF MPS System inputs UHV ion pumps- all ganged to a single dry contact BLM/BCM type inputs (qty 10) HDice “off target” detector (qty 1) Dipole magnet window comparators (qty 3) ¼ cryounit quench detector? (qty 1) ?? (5 more inputs for unknowns)

4 UITF MPS System outputs
Signal to close all valves if UHV ion pump dry contact opens. This signal will also turn off laser. Note: Since this is a very infrequent event, we may want to also shut down Glassman HVPS All other inputs will only turn off laser using the tune mode generator system (which uses an RTP cell for <250ns response, backed up by shutter 5-10ms later)

5 MPS timing requirements
All inputs should be processed to create an output within 10 micro-seconds.

6 MPS system communications
All inputs are visible to EPICS All outputs are shown on EPICS First fault detection is desirable and the first fault should be visible on EPICS EPICS should have the ability to mask or clear any input

7 Up for discussion Hansknecht- I dislike the expense and complexity of fiber optic systems, but a simpler fiber system could be useful because the only other option is running RG-58 everywhere. I like the “plastic fiber optic” systems available where the inexpensive plastic fiber is simply cut to length and inserted in a transmitter or detector. We don’t need to modulate the light. We just say “light=OK, no light=BAD” See And see These devices through cheap plastic fiber would give us a system that responds in sub microsecond regime.

8 Additional discussion
This fiber might be useful to build the HDice “off target” detector. Simply route it into a fast photodiode and trip beam if it see’s light.
