Facilitation by Molly Matthews ■ Shayla Miles ■ Yuki Ohashi ■ Jesika Kiesel
2
Introduction Reading for today discussed marital traditions of Bedouin women After reading about Bedouin marriage traditions, do you feel that Bedouin women are powerless? Do they view themselves as powerless or oppressed? Does American situated knowledge affect how we view these traditions?
3
Activity In your small group, please discuss the marital traditions of your assigned culture Questions to keep in mind: What are some similarities and/or differences between Bedouin and American marital traditions? How have these traditions in both cases changed over time?
4
Conclusion Are these ‘generalized’ culturally imposed changes or does the individual play a part in generational changes? Difficult to identify generational changes due to generalizations Bedouin women generalize about American traditions just as we make generalizations about them
5
Conclusion Women of both cultures are not passive agents
They are active participants in what’s going on. Concept of what is appropriate changes over time. Ex: “The women disapprove because so many songs are indecent” (pg 187)
