16 A Supplemental Instructional Model in Nursing Education in a HBCU
Tabita Rigsby MSN,RN & Dorothy Glisson, MSN, RN CONCLUSION NSSC results from fall 2016 indicate no real differences in student outcomes of those who attended NSSC and those who did not. The percentage of students who attended at least one SI session in relation to the number of students in the NURS 348 course was high, indicating a significant amount of attendance at the center. Students who earned a B or above in the course was slightly higher among the students that did not attend NSSC. Majority of the students who did not attend NSSC were accelerated students. DISCUSSION This proposed initiative establishes a Nursing Student Success Center (NSSC) at Bowie State University (BSU) Nursing school that will advance the education of nursing students to a BSN, increase NCLEX first-time pass rates and ultimately contribute to the number of MSNs and PhDs in Maryland. The NSSC will initially focus on improving student performance in the Adult Medical Surgical course. This course is foundational to comprehending the core nursing material required to graduate with a BSN, pass the NCLEX, and ultimately effectively serve Maryland patients. Poor NCLEX pass rates at Bowie State University threaten to reduce the number of RNs with BSNs in Maryland. Improving student performance in the Adult Medical Surgical course will have a domino effect of increasing retention/graduation rates, increasing the number of BSNs from Bowie State, increasing the NCLEX first-time pass rates, and increasing the number of MSNs and PhDs statewide. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Maryland Higher Education Commission (MEHC). Nursing Support Program (NSP) II Grant ABSTRACT Due to the difficult and rigorous nature of nursing education, student retention and attrition are major concerns for nursing faculty at universities nationwide. The application of the Supplemental Instruction (SI) model and philosophy is currently being used in an undergraduate Baccalaureate program at a Historically Black College & University (HBCU).  Funding was provided to establish a Nursing Student Success Center (NSSC), which has successfully implemented SI and tutoring for nursing students. The goal of the NSSC is to increase NCLEX first-time pass rates and ultimately contribute to the number of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) prepared nurses.  The NSSC has initially focused on improving student performance in the Adult Medical Surgical course.  This course is identified with the highest attrition rate in the nursing program and significantly impacts student retention and time to graduation. Improving student performance in the Adult Medical Surgical nursing course will have a domino effect of increasing retention graduation rates, the number of BSN prepared nurses, and the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) first-time pass rates. INTRODUCTION Students who fail the Adult Medical Surgical course must delay their graduation a year or withdraw from the nursing program entirely. Students delaying graduation cause the graduation rate to decrease. Also, students withdrawing from the program cause the retention rate to decrease. The NSSC will have the opposite effect. Due to remediation, more students will pass and receive 83% or above in the Adult Medical Surgical course and this will cause retention rates and graduation rates to rise. The NSSC will address one of the most serious issues in the Bowie State Nursing School, low NCLEX first-time pass rates, by raising the comprehension of critical nursing material of more students. Much of the Adult Medical Surgical course material is covered by the NCLEX therefore the number of students who pass the NCLEX on the first attempt will increase. METHODS RESULTS
