1 JINA Outreach: Bringing the Science of the Stars to Classrooms and to the Community
JINA is supported by the National Science Foundation through the Physics Frontier Center Program.

2 Member Institutions Michigan State University – National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory University of Chicago - Alliances Center for Astrophysical Thermo-nuclear Flashes University of Notre Dame – Institute for Structure and Nuclear Astrophysics

3 Mission and Vision To contribute to K-12 science education
To encourage future nuclear astrophysicists To enhance diversity in the field

4 High School Students August 9-14
The Physics of Atomic Nuclei Program at NSCL 16th Annual PAN Teachers August 2-7 High School Students August 9-14 PAN is an outreach program at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), located on the campus of Michigan State University. It is run by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics (JINA), NSCL faculty and staff.

5 PIXE-PAN (Proton-Induced X-ray Emission Physics of Atomic Nuclei)
4th Annual PIXE-PAN Teachers June 15-26 High School Students June 22-26 CEUs / Graduate Credit This program introduces teachers and students to the fundamentals of the extremely small domain of atomic nuclei and its connection to the extremely large domain of astrophysics and cosmology.

6 Mathematics Science and Technology (MST at MSU)
July 12-25, 2009 MST is a two-week residential camp for middle school students that offers the opportunity to explore several subjects. Twenty students spent two hours each day studying nuclear astrophysics with JINA faculty and staff. Topics ranged from explosive nucleo-synthesis to high-energy cosmic rays.

7 Sensing Our World is possible thanks to JINA, ISNAP, the College
Sensing Our World GO GREE This year’s program involved students in understanding and responding to some of the most serious problems threatening our planet. They learned about the fundamental forces underlying super-conductivity, solar radiation, the physics of energy, how chemists are developing biodegradable alternatives to consumer goods, the malaria parasite in human evolution, environmental philosophy, and ecological adaptation. They also investigated the lakes and forested areas on campus, and toured the ND power plant. July 13-17, 2009 Sensing Our World is possible thanks to JINA, ISNAP, the College of Science, the Department of Physics, Dr. H. Gordon Berry (NISMEC), Siemens Foundation, and the University Of Notre Dame.

9 JINA STAR (Stellar Aptitude Resources) Games: On-Line Interactives in Nuclear Astrophysics
The ten part series will begin with three primers – introductions to astronomy, astrophysics and nuclear physics and then move through the subject matter, ending with the future of nuclear astrophysics. First there is a narrative, then a ‘drag and drop’ section where players create reactions, and last there is a quiz. Three Games are already on line!
