This presentation is important to “set the scene” and introduce the definition and examples of Business Intelligence (BI). It is also an opportunity introduce the Microsoft products to deliver BI authoring and sharing capabilities.
Do not spend too much time on the Microsoft products as they are covered in more detail in product- dedicated topics.
It is important to define BI and SSBI, and the SSBI topic leads into the opportunity for Microsoft partners to produce SSBI solutions for SMB customers.

Today, BI is generally a well-understood term
According to Gartner, BI is defined as:
It encompasses a broad spectrum of technologies and usually requires skilled professionals to implement and manage
A broad category of applications and technologies for gathering, storing, analyzing, sharing and providing access to data to help enterprise users make better business decisions

Reduce the time to decision
Its goal is often to:
Impact the bottom line by measuring specific operations

Describe BI examples that map to the backgrounds of the attendees.
Stress the emphasized point about BI no longer being a luxury.
BI is no longer a luxury afforded by a larger companies — it is now considered an essential part of the IT portfolio

Office is a suite of productivity applications well suited for SSBI
These applications:
Play a major role in realizing Microsoft’s BI vision
Are designed to help users easily find, analyze, and more securely share business information
Notably, Excel 2013 plays a major role in delivering SSBI
Visio 2013 can play a role also, albeit a lesser one
Introduce Microsoft Office and emphasize its role to realize Microsoft’s BI vision.
To help introduce the emphasis of Office SSBI, mention that Excel 2013 (and prior versions) plays a major role in this delivery.
Visio plays a role too, however this training course does not provide Visio educational material. It does not fit into the Power BI suite of BI experiences.

Microsoft Office 2013 – Excel
Over the past decade, the core spreadsheet capabilities have been enhanced to enable analysts to analyze, communicate, and manage information
Comprehensive support for querying Analysis Services data models
Rich and interactive data visualizations
Add-ins provide rich and integrated BI capabilities:
Power Query – data acquisition and preparation
Power Pivot – data modeling
Power View – presentation-ready, and interactive reports
Power Map – 3D geospatial visualization
Emphasize that Excel is now a full-fledged BI client. It can be used to author a range of BI capabilities including data models, queries, reports and other data visualizations.
A module is dedicated to each of the BI add-ins. Do not spend too much time describing each in detail now.
Use the animation to describe the versions of Excel that the add-ins are available. Also, point out that Power Query and Power Map are new. Power Pivot has been available since SQL Server 2008 R2 for Excel 2010; and Power View was made available in Excel in Excel 2013.
Note: This course presents the Excel Power BI authoring topics in the order of Power Pivot, Power Query, Power View and then Power Map. From a marketing perspective it makes more sense to start with data acquisition with Power Query.

This slide quickly introduces SQL Server as a topic relevant to delivering BI customers.
It is, however, out of scope for this one day course.
Be sure to point out the training resource on the next slide, which would enable an attendee to discover what they can do with SQL Server BI.
SQL Server is out of scope for this course, but it is still relevant to delivering BI to customers, particularly when they may already have SQL Server instances available
