3 Key idea: Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are the result of physical processes
Plate Tectonics theory Global distribution of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and their relationship to plate margins. Physical processes taking place at different types of plate margin (constructive, destructive and conservative) that lead to earthquake and volcanic activity.

4 Global distribution of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and their relationship to plate margins.
Up to 4: Describe how earthquakes and volcanoes are found on/near plate margins. Name one or two major tectonic plates. 5/6: Describe how earthquakes and volcanoes are found on/near plate margins in more detail and begin to identify patterns. Name several of the major tectonic plates and areas of the world where there is significant tectonic activity. 7+: Describe how earthquakes and volcanoes are found on/near plate margins in more detail with a clear idea of global pattern. Name most, if not all, of the major tectonic plates and areas of the world known for tectonic activity.

5 Global distribution of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and their relationship to plate margins

6 The places where the plates meet are called boundaries or plate margins.

7 If we plot the occurrence of earthquakes and volcanoes on to a map, what do you notice?

8 Earthquakes and volcanoes are nearly always found on or near plate margins. This is because of the movement of plates in these areas.

10 Describe the pattern of earthquake activity

11 Today's earthquakes

13 Numeracy In Geography A total of 1482 earthquakes occurred in a 7-day period at the end of April 2016. Work out the average number of earthquakes per day. Work out the average number of earthquakes per hour. Can you calculate the frequency of the earthquakes?

14

15 Describe the pattern of active volcanoes on the map (3)
You need 3 credit worthy points. You must use place names from the map. The question asks for pattern - don’t give separately named places!

16 Use the USGS website to find a map of recent earthquakes.
You could look at a single day or a whole week. Copy and paste the map into a Word document and write a few sentences to describe the pattern of the earthquakes. Can you work out which plates have caused them?
