1 Second Semester EAL Nursing Tutorial Student Learning Services
21 August 2017 Anthea Newport Student Learning Services

2 Today’s session APA referencing (continued from last week)
To learn how to quote and paraphrase To identify parts of reference list entries To learn where to get more help with referencing Useful online resources to support you with your learning Campus tour for students who missed it Note: Students who came to last week’s tutorial said that they would like to get lots of help with APA referencing. That’s fine – you just need to bring your questions about this to these tutorials. For example, if you are working on an assignment and you don’t know how to reference a source, bring the book or show me the website / online source on your device (or it to me) and we will look at this in the tutorial.

3 Examples of “Quote” and Paraphrase
“There is growing awareness that students’ performance, even in higher education, can be improved through training in relevant academic skills” (Cottrell, 2001, p. 9). Paraphrasing: It is accepted that learning academic skills improves the performance of tertiary level students (Cottrell, 2001, p. 9). Cottrell (2001) observes that when tertiary level students acquire academic study skills their performance improves (p. 9). Paraphrasing help: Massey University’s OWLL site and Wintec’s Academic Learning Resources

8 Use of abbreviations in-text
Use an organisation’s name in full the first time and give the abbreviation. Second and subsequent times, use the abbreviation. Eg The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO, 2010) is an organisation that exists to…. (p. 3). OR ……………. (New Zealand Nurses Organisation [NZNO], 2010, p. 3). Then: …………… (NZNO, 2010, p. 5). Note about abbreviations: The first time you mention an organisation in full, you can give the abbreviation and then use it from then on. The Nursing Council of New Zealand is abbreviated to: NCNZ. Note that when the author’s name is in parentheses, then the abbreviation must go in square brackets (as in the second example above.)
