Dr. Herc’s Variable The “E” in the scientific method is very important! The Experiment lets us know if our hypothesis is correct or not There are 4 variables that are important to know to complete or design any science experiment

Independent Variable The factor that’s intentionally varied (changed) by the experimenter (The thing you are doing) Example: If I were testing the affects of light on plant growth, I would vary the amount of light, making it the independent variable.

Dependent Variable The factor that may change as a result of changes made in the independent variable (The thing we are measuring) Example: If I were studying the effects of light on plant growth, the amount of growth the plant made within the experiment would be the dependent variable. We know this because the amount of growth is directly dependent on the amount of the light.

Control Group/Controlled Variable
This is what we compare our experiment to. It is exposed to the same conditions except for the variable being tested, and is kept “normal”. Example: the control group would not get varied amounts of light. Depending on the experiment, the control group would probably sit in a dark room

Constants Factors in an experiment that remain the same in both the experimental group and the control group For example, the plants in both groups would receive water, soil, and maybe even fertilizer.
