1 Research articles published by Korean spine surgeons: Scientific progress and the increase in spine surgery  Soo Eon Lee, Tae-Ahn Jahng, Ki-Jeong Kim, Seung-Jae Hyun, Hyun Jib Kim, Yoshiharu Kawaguchi  Journal of Clinical Neuroscience  Volume 36, Pages 6-11 (February 2017) DOI: /j.jocn Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd Terms and Conditions

2 Fig. 1 Research articles authors by Korean spine surgeons. A total of 7611 articles were retrieved from Medline/PubMed online database, and 1982 articles were published by Korean spine surgeons between 2000 and 2014. 3 Fig. 2 The number of main spine surgery in Korea. According to the main surgery statistical yearbook from Korean National Health Insurance Service, the total number of spine surgery was increased from 92,390 in 2004 to 164,291 in 2013 (p=0.005). 4 Fig. 3 Annual number of research articles published by Korean spine surgeons. Research publications have been annually increased with statistical significance (p<0.001). The original study has been accompanied the most increased type of study. Journal of Clinical Neuroscience  , 6-11DOI: ( /j.jocn ) Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd Terms and Conditions

5 Fig. 4 Annual publications stratified by Oxford levels of evidence. The number of articles at Oxford levels 1, 2, and 3 increased annually (p<0.001), and there was a significant positive correlation between Oxford levels of 1, 2, and 3 and the annual number of publications (r=0.956, p<0.001). 6 Fig. 5 Analysis of impact factor. The lower line was shown annual mean impact factor (IF) of total 1982 articles, and IF has been tendency toward lower IF (p=0.005) with negative correlation with annual number of publication (r=−0.714, p=0.003). Through the upper line was demonstrated IF of 885 articles with IF>1.79, IF has had stationary value (p=0.509) and no correlation was revealed to annual number of publications (r=0.121, p=0.666). 7 Fig. 6 Main topics of research articles by Korean spine surgeons. Through the main topic of articles were divided into 28 categories, the most common topics were degenerative lumbar spine, disc degeneration, primary spinal tumor, spine trauma, complications and degenerative cervical spine. 8 Fig. 7 The percentage of each topic authored by neurosurgeon and orthopedics. The more than 50% of topics were authored by NS spine surgeons, but 6 categories were under 50% percentage; idiopathic or neuromuscular scoliosis, degenerative spinal deformity, ankylosing spondylitis, bone metabolism, bone fusion and spinal alignment and/or motion. Meanwhile, less than 20% of topics were published by OS spine surgeons; thoracic spinal pathology, epidural pathology, intradural pathology, primary spinal tumor and metastatic spinal tumor.
