Can you see energy? How can you store something you can’t see?

Why Store Energy? For future use To prevent wasting extra energy that’s made If you have too much energy in, things blow up, or the energy needs to be released and wasted. If you have too little energy, there will be black outs.

15 What is the most common way to store electrical energy?
What kind of energy is in batteries (chemical, mechanical or thermal)? Every single portable electronic device has batteries in it. Batteries come in all different shapes and sizes – the one in your car is much bigger than the one in your cell phone. All batteries have chemicals in them… let’s take a look inside a battery… Two or more chemicals are stored in each battery. If the chemicals mix together, electrical current flows. Every thing is made up of chemical bonds. If you break the bonds (like by burning), you release energy. Batteries!

This is actually setting up for the energy transformation activity. Procedure: Partially fill one cup w/ water Set filled cup on desk and ask class if this is stored energy. Blow up balloon and ask class where the stored energy is.

Potential Energy Kinetic Energy Ask for students to think of how you can transform energy from potential energy to kinetic energy. Show demos. Balloon Spring Rubber band Newton’s cradle – when you do this, introduce the concept of the hypothesis. Then ask them how you can transform kinetic energy into potential energy. This type of generator uses gasoline to run – it transforms the potential energy of the gasoline into electrical energy. But we’re trying to move away from using fossil fuels, so I’m going to show you different types of generators that don’t require fossil fuels. Large generators at Hoover Dam.
