3 What is Universal Design?
Designing interiors and products to accommodate all people with a variety of requirements, needs, and abilities.

4 What is Universal Design?
Universal design acknowledges that people are of different sizes, ages, and abilities. We know universal design is working if no special adaptations are required in the home regardless if the occupant’s needs change.

5 Barrier Free Design Living spaces that are designed without structures that would prevent access by people with special needs

6 Adaptable Design Design features that are temporary and can be easily changed. For example, grab bars by toilet

7 Exterior Ramp Ground level entrance Wide door Paved driveway
Safety rails Textures must be stable, firm, slip-resistant,

13 Scavenger Hunt Using the Scavenger Hunt guide you are going to assess how FHS is doing in it’s UNIVERSAL DESIGN As a school we should be universal for all students Go to each area indicated and write down what is universally designed and/or what the limitations are in that area of the school Be back in __20___ minutes

14 Scavenger Hunt When you return, take a moment to write a reflection based on your findings. Is FHS a suitable space for the disabled? The rest of your time needs to be spent working on Question 3 in your text on page 37….room drawing
