1 From Fisherman to Shepherd
Peter's community was surrounded by suffering and enduring persecution: Their strength came in their togetherness which was rooted in Jesus call to Peter to come follow him. 1 Peter 1:1-6

2 “Now come and have some breakfast. ” Jesus said
“Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said. None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead. After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?"“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs"... John 21 Peter's faith was shaped, like ours, by significant moments of weakness where Jesus met him in his inability rather than ability. This morning, I'd like to argue that Peter's beach experience with Jesus in John 21 catalyzed his pastoral leadership and helps explain 1 Peter 5:1-6, specifically Peter's call to old and young.

3 Our life together must take place on the beach.
Beach moments = humility that develops in our weakest, most cowardly moments: this is where Jesus lives in our midst

4 Do you love me Peter?

6 And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches
And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor. – 1 Peter 5:1-4

As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. – 1 Peter 5:1-2 Interpreters interrupt the designation of elders as either those with a specific office or role within the community of faith or those who are more seasoned or mature. Young men in 1 Peter 5:5 seems to be contrasted with elder *******Either way this letter would have been read with the community of faith and all members would have heard the feedback Peter gave to elders as well as younger men.

8 Suffering and Glory…

9 As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don't lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor. – 1 Peter 5: 2-4 ποιμάνατε τὸ ἐν ὑμῖν ποίμνιον – Parallels Jesus' word in John 21:16 …then Peter feed my sheep. Pastoral leadership driven by empathy, selflessness – Elders are called to embody this.

11 Influence in our community emerges from the vulnerability that originates in our weakness and inability rather than our ability...

12 Thus any authority that exists within our faith community must be tied intimately to our own individual moments on the beach with Jesus...

13 Empathy guides, vulnerability galvanizes, and humility characterizes influence within Jesus' community. Peter is not explicit about his experience on the beach here, as to be overly self-centered.

14 Help... As a fellow elder, I appeal to you: Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. Do I complain? Am I frustrated? Do I tell people to do things more than modeling for them?

15 In the same way, you younger men must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, serve each other in humility, for“God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 1 Peter 5: 5, 6

19 Our life together must take place on the beach.

20 153 Peter counted them because it is often easier to do the administrative tasks of church than the relational tasks of growing together

21 ...“I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don't want to go.” Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”John 21

22 In this we look to the chief Shepherd.
Do you love me? Then feed my sheep…
