Winn-Dixie looked at the preacher. He didn’t smile at him, but he opened his mouth wide like he was laughing, like the preacher had just told him the funniest joke in the world; and this is what amazed me the most: The preacher laughed back.
Winn-Dixie is laughing…

3. barreling barreling- moving fast, often carelessly
Winn-Dixie came barreling right toward him like he was a bowling ball and the preacher was the only pin left standing, and wham, they both fell to the ground.

4. criminal Otis had been in jail in the past.
criminal… a person who has committed a crime.

5. nodding
nodding – lowering and raising one’s head slightly to show understanding or agreement

6. pathological pathological – obsessive, excessive
Winn-Dixie had a pathological fear of thunderstorms.

7. snake charmer
snake charmer – an entertainer who appears to make snakes move by playing music
At Gertrude’s Pets, Otis played his guitar and all the animals were charmed.

8. terrorized
terrorized- created and maintained state of extreme fear and distress in someone; fill with terror…
This dog was terrorized by the thunderstorm too.

9. whimpering
whimpering – making a series of low, weak sounds expressive of fear, pain, or unhappiness…
Winn-Dixie was whimpering during the thunderstorm..
I am whimpering … because I am scared of the weather.. “Arrrrr….arrrrrr…”
