Metamorphic rocks are formed when the properties of existing rocks are changed by the earth’s natural forces. Heat and pressure can change a rock into a metamorphic rock

3 The rock cannot melt during this process or it would become an igneous rock.

7 Metamorphic rocks may look similar to the original rock, but some of their properties will be changed through the metamorphic process.

Foliated Non-Foliated

Gneiss (Formed from Granite)

10 Common Metamorphic Rocks:
Slate (Formed from Shale)

11 Common Metamorphic Rocks:
Marble (Formed from Limestone)

12 Common Metamorphic Rocks:
Quartzite (Formed from Quartz)

13 Common Metamorphic Rocks:
Schist (Formed from Mica or Muscovite)
