2 Q1: Voices of Modern Culture Unit Introduction
Journal #2 - 9/3/2014: Culture is often difficult to define, but it influences everything from who you are as an individual to how you related to other people at home and around the world. Just what is culture, and how does it contribute to the way you see the world? Over the course of this quarter, we will learn about the concept of VOICE, or how you express identity in written, spoken, or artistic forms. Through our study, we will discover how writers use VOICE to express cultural ideas and personal identities.

3 Elements of VOICE: Diction: word choice +
Syntax: word arrangement, punctuation = Tone: author’s attitude – formed by an author’s choices of diction and syntax

4 Why do we annotate? What do we annotate?

5 What are I/M style annotations?
I = Identify a strategy (see LIT TERMS GLOSSARY) M = Meaning/Significance created in the text by using the identified strategy. (see STYLE NOTES) You will label the annotation as follows: I = diction (highlight the word/phrase or write the word) M = use of the word “communion” characterizes the close relationship between the mother and daughter as the quilt is a metaphor for their bond; communion signifies a unifying bond

8 “My Mother Pieced Quilts”
In the poem “My Mother Pieced Quilts” the speaker uses images of quilts and quilting to show connections to both her mother and to her heritage as a Mexican American.

9 READING THE TEXT Think about the title if there is one. What associations come to mind? Any author info? Preview the organization of the text. What do you notice? When reading a poem, follow the punctuation and the natural cadence of the lines. Don’t fall into typewriter mode! Think about how the author creates meaning. On your second read, mark your annotations.

10 Complete corresponding I/M annotation for each question.
Homework: Complete “My Mother Pieced Quilts” Guided Analysis Questions in complete sentences. Complete corresponding I/M annotation for each question. Due next class.
