Georgian myths & legends
Georgia is a very old country. Its myths and legends are also very very old. The ancient Georgians had their own forms of religion. They believed in gods and goddesses.

The main god, god of religion was Armazi
The main god, god of religion was Armazi. Like Zeus he was a god of sky, thunder, rain and flora. Also he was a god of war. As there was a lot of grape, one of the main gods was Aguna. If the people wanted their agriculture to grow better, they prayed and asked Aguna. The goddess of place was Adgilis Deda. It was a beautiful woman who cared about the inhabitants. Also she was patroness of women, children, cows and hunters.

The god of the winter was Dilis Warsklavi
The god of the winter was Dilis Warsklavi. The goddess of sun, like Jarilo in Russia was Mzekala(the woman of sun). The god of the moon was Tetri Giorgi(white George). All of them had the bodies of mortals like Greek gods. Like mortals they had their troubles.

There were angry demons Ali, who harmed small babies and lonely travelers. They had long dirty hairs, iron teeth and long claws. Also there were an angry spirits who wore white cape and they had black horses. If people were ill, they thought it was because of Alis, who carried illnesses. Also there was a monster who killed people in forests at night. His name was Dev. It was a big and high monster.

As well as gods, spirits and monsters, there is one of the most famous heroes in Georgia. His name was Amirani. He was the son of a hunter and goddess of hunters - Dali. It was a hero-giant who on behalf of gods fought with demons, spirits and monsters. As Heracles, he also was a tremendous athlete and had a lot of journeys around the world fighting with opponents.

Kartlis Deda(the mother of country) is a big statue in Tbilisi
Kartlis Deda(the mother of country) is a big statue in Tbilisi. The statue symbolises the Georgian national character: the female figure holds in the left hand a bowl with wine for a greeting of those who has come as the friend and in the right hand a sword for those who has come as the enemy.
