Dissolved Oxygen By: Danny Barger, Julie Guenther, Kelsey Dinges, and Madeline Nesbit

2 Introduction Oxygen gas dissolved in water is vital to the existence of aquatic and terrestrial life. Oxygen gas is dissolved in water by a variety of processes—diffusion between the atmosphere and water at its surface, aeration as water flows over rocks and other debris, churning of water by waves and wind, and photosynthesis of aquatic plants. Factors that affect the concentration of dissolved oxygen in an aquatic environment include: temperature, stream flow, air pressure, aquatic plants, decaying organic matter, and human activities.

3 Chemical and Physical Explanation
Chemical Explanation: It is dissolved by: -Diffusion from Atmosphere -Aeration as water moves over rocks and debris -Aeration from wind and waves -photosynthesis of aquatic plants

4 Chemical and Physical Explanation (continued)
Chemical Explanation continued): It is measured in mg/L = ppm Chemical Symbol for Oxygen: O Physical Explanation: Oxygen that is freely available in water to sustain the lives of fish and other aquatic organisms.

5 Expectations Minimum water quality standard of Wisconsin is 5 mg/L dissolved oxygen Fox River Basin Streams have dissolved oxygen levels between mg/L

6 Expectations (continued)
Trout streams may not have a DO level of less than 6 mg/L at any time, may not have less than 7 mg/L of DO in spawning season

7 Past Data at our site Average Dissolved Oxygen (mg/L)- ranged between Water Temperature ranged for Site A- 18.1, Site B 18 Atmospheric Pressure (mmHg)- both sites- 752 100% Dissolved Oxygen (mg/L)- both site- 7.83 Percent Saturation- Site A , Site B According to the EPA website there is usually low dissolved oxygen levels.

8 Methodology Prepare the Dissolved Oxygen Probe for use.
Set up the calibration for the probe. Get all of your data from using these tools.

9 Safety and Equipment Safety- Goggles, gloves
Equipment-Lab Quest, Lab Quest App, Vernier Dissolved Oxygen Probe, 250 mL beaker, Sodium Sulfite Calibration Solution, DO Electrode Filling Solution, 100% calibration bottle, pipet, small plastic or paper cup, Tissues or paper towels.

10 Concerns for Reliability of Data
To strengthen the lab we could have measured amounts of chemicals more clearly, made sure the DO levels were precise, and complete the experiment twice. We calculated the Dissolved oxygen of Distilled water to be 5.1 mg/L. 100% Dissolved oxygen of the distilled water equaled 8.59 mg/L. The percent Saturation of the distilled water was 59%. The atmospheric pressure equaled 742 mmHg. The water Temperature was 21.8%.

11 5 Question Quiz What is the chemical Symbol for Oxygen?
What safety equipment was needed for this experiment? Oxygen gas dissolved in water is ________to the existence of aquatic and terrestrial life. Name a Factor that affects the concentration of dissolved oxygen in an aquatic environment. What is DO measured in?
