Lecture 11 Makerbot 3-D Printing 5/12/2018 Engineering Graphics & 3-D Modeling

2 Engineering Graphics & 3-D Modeling
Project Components Skid Loader Toy: Teams of about 5 students Parts Needed: All 7 part details & 3 assemblies of the design packet (team) Axle (necessary views) Hub Tire Seat Side (necessary views/notes) Arm Bucket Bill of Material with Cost Roll-Up (Excel Spreadsheet 8-1/2 x 11 format) Cover Sheet (Installation Drawing) All drawings on Team-Formatted Title Blocks Produce entire model on 3-D Printer (.STL files → .Thing files) Need a pretty solid base Printing overhangs is a problem → use (breakaway) supports One alternate end effector from each team member (bonus pts!) Team Design Packet: (turn in electronically by 1:00 PM on Wed. 14 DEC) Axle-Hub-Tire Sub-Assembly Skid Loader Assembly Seat-Side Sub-Assembly 5/12/2018 Engineering Graphics & 3-D Modeling

3 Submission Instructions
To submit your team’s term project, do the following steps: Open the F: drive from your computer Go to the folder labeled tmpfiles Go to the folder labeled IENG 248 Term Projects Create/find the folder with your team name, and open it Copy all of the following files into the folder: Each individual part file Each individual drawing file Any assembly file(s) All the .Thing files for 3-D printing Any other files that your team wishes to submit for grading Send an to the instructor with the following subject: IENG Final Project – and add your team name at the end In the body of the text: List each team member and the part files / drawings / etc. that they created for the project – one student per line. Hit the send button Go enjoy your break! 5/12/2018 Engineering Graphics & 3-D Modeling

4 Engineering Graphics & 3-D Modeling
Project Components Printing the Skid Loader Toy: Start with good SolidWorks Model If it won’t assemble in SolidWorks, it won’t assemble in 3-D Printing overhangs is a problem – handle in Makerbot Desktop Create an STL model of each component Create an .STL model of each component needed File > Save As Use File Type pull-down to find .STL (middle of list) Store on a jump drive Parts Needed: All eight* (left and right side are separate) parts of the design packet (team) One end effector from each team member, if doing the bonus All parts require an STL file Put a copy of each file onto a jump drive Orient & nest the parts in Makerbot Desktop Save the nested parts – and settings as .Thing Team Design Product: (turn in by 1:00 PM on Wed. 14 DEC) 5/12/2018 Engineering Graphics & 3-D Modeling

5 Engineering Graphics & 3-D Modeling
Assignments Makerbot Steps (Outline) on Printer Tablet Open each .STL file in Makerbot Desktop Scale inches to mm if not designed in mm to start with Nest parts near the center of the platform for accuracy Use Rotate Objects button to select best orientation Use Move Objects button (and On Platform button) to locate near to, but not overlapping, other parts Use Settings tab to prepare to print Avoid overhangs if possible, but if not, Turn on supports Turn rafts off (if needed) Save file as .Thing after settings are set Prepare to Print Use Preview tab to verify settings Check time estimate and note the material weight Load Material onto spool and into extruder Click Print! 5/12/2018 Engineering Graphics & 3-D Modeling
