AVID’s Instructional Strategies are developed to:
Develop students as readers and writers
Develop a deep knowledge of content
Help students utilize specific strategies for reading, writing, thinking, and talking
Develop habits, skills, and behaviors that allows students to use their acquired knowledge and skills

18. Instructional Strategies: Creating a One-Pager
Allows students to express their comprehension of, reactions to and connections with a specific area of study
Works well as an alternative culminating performance assessment
Variations: Students may create a One-Pager about themselves, their family, or their culture.

19. Creating a One Pager (Style 1)
Teacher provides prompt to focus students’ answers.
Student copy the prompt into the first box.
Students pick details from the text that exemplify or connect the prompt.
Next, students copy those details from the text into the second box.
Students illustrate their excerpt from the text in the third box.
In their own words, students react to , or connect with their chosen piece of text, illustration, and prompt.

20. Creating a One-Pager (Style 2)
All work must be on only one side of the paper
Be colorful and neat! Nothing should be left in plain pencil!
Word cluster around one of the visual images
One-pager should include:
First and last name
Poem about an important figure, character, or member of the unit of study
Border that reflects the theme, concept or message of the unit of study
Personal statement supporting your selections from the text, artwork, and opinions
Reactions and connections to the unit of study (using the text as a beginning point)
Visual images that strongly relate to the unit of study
Level One, Two, or Three questions with answers using solid support

AVID’S note-taking curriculum is designed to introduce students to “The CORNELL WAY”, a method of note-taking that increases information retention and understanding to support student success.
For AVID Elementary, it is called the STAR Strategy.

24. STAR Note Taking Strategy
Set Up Notes
Write name, class, and date in upper- right hand corner
Write title of notes in center
Take Notes
Write facts, details, explanations, definitions, etc.
Do not worry about spelling
Use abbreviations, pictures, drawings, dots, dashes, numbers, etc.
Add to Notes
Often collaborative
Make additions, deletions, or clarifications.
Use different colors for additions/corrections
Review Notes
Review notes regularly: weekly and before an assessment
Work with a study buddy whenever possible
Recopy notes for neatness and readability, if necessary
