1 Kentisbeare Primary School Spelling Workshop

2 Aims To discuss how and why the teaching of spelling has changed.
To show you ways that you can support your child at home. To answer any questions you have about spelling.

3 Why? Nationally, spelling has become a difficult area to tackle in recent years. Children are not always remembering the spellings set for them and applying their knowledge of spelling and patterns within their writing.

4 Is learning ‘weekly set spellings’ working?
What impact is it having?

5 How has spelling changed?
ACTIVE LEARNERS! A set of spellings will be provided. (This will differ depending on each year group) Children will practice only a set few spellings each week using a range of activities. Repetition and practice of these spellings in a variety of ways will be important!

6 TESTING! There will be no set spelling tests at the end of the week.
Your child’s progress with spelling will be continuously and repeatedly monitored on a daily basis.

7 Spelling in the classroom
Every day your child will have phonics (and/or) spelling. We teach using ‘Letters and Sounds’ and ‘Spelling Pathway’. • Lessons will include a range of activities surrounding the spelling of common words and spelling patterns.
