Geography~Climate The land of the Plains Native Americans stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and from Canada to Texas. Groups like the Lakota and Dakota (Sioux), Pawnee and Arapaho lived in the northern and central part of the region. Tribes like the Kiowa, Apache and Comanche lived in the southern area. The people of the Plains came from other areas after being pushed out by other tribes. In the plains they became buffalo hunters. Climate: hot summers, cold winters, plenty of rain for crops

5 The Buffalo ~ Buffalo were especially important to
Plains Native Americans. Plains tribes used every part of the buffalo. hide - teepees, clothing, and drums. bones - tools for hunting, building and eating meat - provided food. Even the dung was used for fuel. The Plains Native Americans followed the buffalo herds.

6 Buffalo Hunting ~ Native Americans dressed up like coyotes and chased the buffalo herd off the side of the cliff.

7 Shelter ~ People lived in teepees or tipis.
The frame was made of wooden poles and buffalo hides were stretched around them. There were flaps at the top to let smoke from a small fire out. Since the plains people often moved around to follow the buffalo, teepees were easy to take down and put up. Some tribes painted patterns on the teepees that told what family they were from, or pictures of the hunts and battles they had been in.

8 Shelter ~ Some of the tribes, like the Pawnee, lived in earth lodges in the eastern part of the plains. Nomads- a group of people that move often to find food. A travois was like a sled used to carry their teepees and other supplies.

9 Pemmican – dried buffalo meat
Food ~ Pemmican – dried buffalo meat This drying rack was easy to put up and take down. They could easily move it from place to place as they followed the buffalo.

trees, stones, buffalo parts. Crops: (food grown on farms): corn, wheat, sunflowers
