1 Statistics in SPSS Lecture 2
Petr Soukup, Charles University in Prague

2 Intro to SPSS 2

3 Intro to SPSS Full name: IBM SPSS Statistics (hereinafter only „SPSS“)
Current version 23 Base and 14 add-in modules Widespread mainly in applied research (market research and public opinion research) Advanced graphics – objects, Java 3

4 SPSS windows and data files
FOR OUR COURSE Data file : *.sav Output file : *.spv Syntax file : *.sps Macro file : *.spm ADVANCED COURSE 4

5 SPSS windows and data files
Data file : *.sav Include data, variable names, variable labels, value labels, missing values etc. Transferable across SPSS versions  Output file : *.spv Include tables, charts and all outputs created by SPSS Can be read only by current version  Recco: Export output to MS Excel or MS WORD and use it for other purposes 5

6 Intro to SPSS menu I File – classsical tool, but with many file types
Edit – once again classical Data – basic settings for your data Transform – basic changes (transformations) for your data Analyze – all statistical procuders grouped into blocks Graphs – all statistical charts 6

7 Intro to SPSS menu II Help – many tools for your development
Tutorial & Case studies – many examples with screenshots (can be computed by every user as data for these studies are available together with software) Statistics coach – can help you to select proper statistical procedure Algorithms – all formulas for computation 7

8 Intro to SPSS menu File – classsical tool, but with many file types
Edit – once again classical Data – basic settings for your data Transform – basic changes (transformations) for your data Analyze – all statistical procuders grouped into blocks Graphs – all statistical charts 8

9 Data matrix 9

10 Data matrix (Data view)
Cases – every row Variables – every column Variable ≠ Question Variable name – name of current column 10

11 Data matrix (Variable view)
Variables – every row Variable property – every column Properties: Name (variable name or technical name) Type Width Decimal Label (variable label) – i.e. wording of the question Values (value labels) – i.e. wording of ind. Answers (codes) Missing (missing value definition) Measure (measurement scale – nominal, ordinal, ...) 11

12 Data matrix (Variable view)
Properties: Name (variable name or technical name) Type Width Decimal Label (variable label) – i.e. wording of the question Values (value labels) – i.e. wording of ind. Answers (codes) Missing (missing value definition) Measure (measurement scale – nominal, ordinal, ...) 12

13 Example of data entry Enter three variables and all necessary properties 13

14 Descriptive statistics in SPSS
Procedure ANALYZE-DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS-DESCRIPTIVES Mean Standard deviation Max. and min. N - number of cases 14

15 Descriptive statistics in SPSS
Procedure ANALYZE-DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS-FREQUENCIES Mean Mode Median and many others (see option Statistics – next lecture) 15

16 Charts in SPSS GRAPHS-CHART BUILDER Bar chart Pie chart
Special charts will be discussed later 16

17 Finis coronat opus Saving data (possibilities, formats) Saving output
Exporting output (possibilities, formats) Changes in output (order and graphics) 17

18 Example of real data EVS study Data and questionnaire
Problem of „big“ data Data archives – basic info 18

19 HW 19

20 HW2 Try to prepare data with at least three variables of different types, i.e. one nominal, one ordinal and one cardinal (scale) Compute mean, median and mode when it is possible and interpret results 20

21 Thanks for your attention
