17 Railway Research Portal
What is it for ?  Gives you an overview of research projects and their deliverables at a global level  Helps you finding research results and/or data in a quick, global and organized manner to efficiently prepare for future research projects  Avoid duplication  Proposes an inter-active rail research data base  Provides contacts as well as data and links to research institutes, researchers, other international rail research data-bases and other rail research related information The railway sector needs to think beyond tomorrow and beyond rail in order to design a strategy for rail at a global level ! What you will find on the portal ? Search engine typing keywords Railway Research e-News Contacts and useful links Research by Topics (link to other research data-banks) Projects sheets Projects evaluations (ERRAC Projects Evaluation sheets) Other Documents (WCRR, TRA documents … etc) Railway Research Events (link to UIC website)

19 Worldwide ETCS and GSM-R Implementations / Projects
Scientific Transport Forum, Moscow; March 2011

20 Existing and Potential Corridors
Develop a few main corridors to capture growing international trade Stronger focus on intermodality and cooperation with shipping lines Use UIC as a platform for development Scientific Transport Forum, Moscow; March 2011

21 Contribution to European Networks and
Masterplans - European high speed network 2020 180 < v < 250 km/h Other lines v > 250 km/h Planned v > 250 km/h Source: UIC Scientific Transport Forum, Moscow; March 2011

22 INNOTRACK – Practice of collaboration
11 Railways 14 Manufacturers 9 Universities 6th Framework Programme, contract no TIP5-CT 3 years of close cooperation ~142 deliverables (~15 administrative) More than pages of report of research & development Reducing cost for maintenance and LCC about 30%

23 ProtectRail – FP7 EU funded project
5 Railways + UIC Supply Industries + UNIFE Universities + Research Institutes Security specialists EU 7th Framework Programme, 42 months of close cooperation, 21 M Euro ~ Develop a comprehensive vision of current and future risks regarding all different assets, Implement asset-oriented integrated solutions Integrate solutions and demonstrate a global architecture, including modularity and interoperability, Derive from these results a future design for homogeneous security.

24 Other EU funded projects with UIC involvement
ERRAC ROADMAP – Designing the “Route-map” (priorities and planning) for future rail research in Europe AUTOMAIN - Augmented Usage of Track by Optimisation of Maintenance, Allocation and Inspection of railway Networks MARATHON - Improvement the performance and appeal of rail freight services for the customers by the fast implementation of technologies, operations and business practices (longer and heavier trains, better service & lower cost). SPECTRUM – New technologies and methods to increase freight competitiveness in the emerging low density, high value market SUSTRAIL - Improvement the sustainability and competitiveness of railway freight transport by reducing maintenance and costs, RAILENERGY – Energy efficiency technologies and operations for EU railways RIVAS - Abatement of Railway Induced Vibration TRIOTRAIN - Wheel/rail interface; aerodynamics ; catenary/pantograph MAINLINE - MAINtenance, renewaL and Improvement of rail transport iNfrastructure to reduce Economic and environmental impacts D-RAIL – Derailment RESTRAIL - Reduction of suicides and trespasses on railway property SKILLRAIL - Education & Training Actions for high skilled job opportunities in the railway sector EURAXLES – bring the risk of failure of railway axles to such a minimum level CleanER-D – Cleaner European Rail Diesel

28 Possible roles for scientists and researchers
Generally this is a role not played by operators, IM’s, supply industry or users Keep up with the future trends in transport and global technological developments (Keeping the rail stakeholders informed about this) Know the problems and research priorities of the rail system and its stakeholders (Network with all rail stakeholders – have an industry advisory board e.g.) Build up expertise and excellence in key areas of present & future research priorities Educate PhD’s in the areas where support is needed Develop specific and appropriate test facilities and keep them updated Support the rail stakeholders through Modeling, measurement and testing Contribute to the development of rail standards and interoperability Support the preparation of research projects Disseminate research results through scientific publications Scientific Transport Forum, Moscow; March 2011

29 Thank you for your kind attention
