1 Product Profiles Kerala Investment Potential
Products based upon Butyl Acrylate from Propylene Derivatives Petrochemical Project (PDPP) of BPCL Kochi Refinery (BPCL KR) Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation Sep 2017 Disclaimer: The findings contained in this document are based on the initial information collated through primary and secondary research, which is indicative in nature. Reference herein to any specific commercial product, process, service by trade name, trademark, manufacturer, or otherwise, does not constitute or imply its endorsement, recommendation, or favouring by KSIDC or any entities thereof. It is, however, advisable to get a detailed feasibility study prepared before taking a final investment decision.

2 Butyl Acrylate ( Butyl prop-2-enoate) is a clear colourless liquid with a sharp characteristic odour that is used in making paints, coatings, caulks, sealants, adhesives… Soluble in ethanol, ethyl ether, acetone; slightly soluble in carbon tetrachloride PROPERTIES Acrylic polymers have good water resistance, low temperature flexibility and excellent weathering and sunlight resistance Hazardous polymerization may occur. Polymerization may be caused by elevated temperature, oxidizers, peroxides, or sunlight. Uninhibited monomer vapour may form polymer in vents and other confined spaces Clear, colourless liquid with a strong, fruity odour When heated to decomposition it emits acrid and irritating fumes Chemical Formula: C7H12O2 Potential Products : Water soluble Paints and Coatings, Adhesives and sealant chemicals

3 Origin Parameter Description Plant Acrylate Unit, Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project (PDPP) of BPCL- KR Raw Material Acrylic Acid and Normal Butanol Quantity 180 KTPA

4 Technical Information
Parameter Description Supplied Drums 200 litre capacity, Tank Trucks, Iso Containers Physical Form Colourless, mobile solvent of medium volatility. Miscible with all common solvents, e.g. alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycols and aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons Density g/cm3 Boiling range Deg C

5 Other Uses Butyl acrylate is a clear, flammable liquid with a fruity, pungent odor. Effect of monomer feed rate on the properties of the copolymer butyl acrylate/vinyl acetate in semi-batch emulsion polymerization Butyl acrylate forms homopolymers and copolymers. Copolymers of butyl acrylate can be prepared with acrylic acid and its salts, amides and esters, and with methacrylates, acrylonitrile, maleic acid esters, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, styrene, butadiene, unsaturated polyesters and drying oils, etc. Butyl acrylate is also a very useful feedstock for chemical synthesis, because it readily undergoes addition reactions with a wide variety of organic and inorganic compounds.
