2. Explorer Belt Registration: At scouts.org.uk/explorerbelt Membership:
Be an Explorer Scout aged over 16 or a Scout Network member
Expedition:
10 day team expedition outside the UK
One major project & 10 minor projects
Projects are a way of encouraging teams to meet and talk to local people, they should keep a record of these projects & contacts to help them during the debriefing, but no need to write a report for each project.
Minimum 50 hours travel time by foot, cycle, horse, canoe or boat.
Over 18’s can be self-led
Use of public transport is acceptable part of traveling time
Minimum team starting size is 3. Minimum completion size is 2

3. Explorer Belt Explorer Belt Major projects
Each team should choose a major project, which the assessment team approves before departure.
The major project should take between 10 & 15 hours to complete.
Major projects should:
Focus on something unique to the country or area
Provide opportunities for meeting local people
Not focused on a single place, day or thing
Will result in a better understanding of the country, its people & way of life

4. Explorer Belt Explorer Belt Sample Major projects
Survey of the leisure and recreation interests of young people & the facilities available to them in urban, sub-urban and rural areas
Investigate typical rural industries & crafts
Make a comparison of lifestyles in the villages & uplands
Follow the course of a river & investigate the different communities it serves, their industry, agriculture & lifestyles
Comparison of an aspect of the country you are in with that aspect in the UK, for example:  Scouting, education, places of worship, agriculture, environment, architecture, culture, life of a young person, health facilities
Investigate the history of a specific area or period in the country
Explore the impact of climate change on the local environment
Explore the Impact of tourism of tourism and lifestyle on the area you travel in
Investigate how locals make use of the landscape around them
Investigate how the EU (or other political considerations) has affected the country & smaller communities
Explore & collect myths & folk stories

5. Explorer Belt Explorer Belt Smaller Projects:
Each team should also complete 10 smaller projects.
5 of these should be surprise projects set by their Unit.
These projects should be given 24 hours before departure.
Teams should be able to choose projects from a longer list of around 20 projects, in order to provide flexibility and choice based on local circumstances.
Smaller projects should:
Need help or information from local people
Prompt the team to try or do something they might otherwise miss
Take an hour or so to complete
Be based around something unique or special about the area being visited

6. Explorer Belt Example Explorer Belt Smaller Projects:
•    Milk a local cow/goat
•    Visit a local place of worship, or take part in an act of worship
•    Sleep within site of a specific landmark
•    Cook a national dish from your home country for a family
•    Work for a family for a day
•    Help out on a local farm
•    Cook a local meal
•    Visit a local leisure facility
•    Teach or learn a local/national dance
•    Buy a selection of postcards and send them to your section leader/DC/etc
•    Appear on local tv/radio/newspaper
•    Get your picture taken with a local dignitary
•    Ride a horse/camel/etc
•    Spend a night in a police station (legally)
•    Sleep somewhere strange or unusual for a night
•    Visit a particular museum, cultural site or tourist attraction
•    Travel on a train/stand on the footplate of a train
•    Teach English at a local school
•    Visit a local Scout/youth group
•    Find out from local people their views on the effectiveness of the public transport
•    Taste as many local chocolates as you can
•    Dress in national costume
•    Describe how local family life differs from your own
•    Visit/take part in a local ceremony
•    Visit a local craftsman
•    Go shopping with a local family
•    Visit a local market and buy a selection of local products to use in your cooking

7. Explorer Belt Presentation:
Covering all elements of the award to the assessment panel
Assessment Panel:
ACC(I), team’s mentor, peers and expedition leadership team
Sign off:
By ACC (Explorers) or ACC (SN)
CSA & QSA:
Can count as QSA IEV International section or nights away
Can only count once
Can count as expedition for Diamond CSA

8. Scouts of the World Award
Membership:
Be a Scout Network member
Discovery Event:
Min. of 4 days based on one of three themes;
Development, Environmental or Peace
Finalise Voluntary Service plans
With mentor based around the theme of your Discovery
Youth work
Contribute to a min of 2 sections meetings for younger sections
Introduce & explorer your chosen theme

9. Scouts of the World Award
Residential
Undertake SOWA voluntary service, in UK or abroad, for min 14 days
Report:
Report back to your mentor
Include feedback from the community who’ve benefited
Presentation:
Present your experience to your Network
QSA:
Can count as QSA IEV section or residential. But can only count once

Environmental educational school project in Malawi (Development)
Working in a health clinic in rural Nepal (Development)
Teaching English in rural Nepalese village scools (Peace)
Working on a community project developing relationships in post civil war Guatemala (Peace)
Joint Israeli & Palestinian housing project in West Bank (Peace)
Footpath maintenance in Iceland (Environment)

11. CSA, QSA & DofE Awards
When the new Scout programme was launched in 2002:
2 new sections Explorer Scouts 14-18, Scout Network (ties in with age ranges for Awards)
Top Awards within Scouting linked to the D of E Awards.
Chief Scout Platinum = Bronze
Chief Scout Diamond = Silver
Queen’s Scout Award = Gold
Additional requirements =
Membership of the movement for a period of time (linked to the durations for D of E)
Nights Away – this can be completed through the expedition and residential sections and also through general scouting experiences.
International, Values & Environment – complete 2 activities with the unit at each level of the award

12. Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Open to anyone aged 14 to 24
Three levels:
Bronze (aged 14+)
Silver (aged 15+)
Gold (aged 16+)
…which are all aligned to a Scouting Award
Need to register for all sections before starting activities.

13. CSA, QSA & DofE Challenges
Complete a personal programme of activities in four sections:
Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community
Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities
Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests
Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad
At QSA & Gold level, an additional Residential section, involves working & staying away from home doing a shared activity with new people for 5 days & 4 nights

14. Something old or something new
No fixed achievement levels
Personal challenges
Must be able to prove a broadening in understanding, increased expertise in a skill or improvement in a physical activity
Activities can be undertaken on either an individual or group basis

15. Additional CSA & QSA Sections
Membership: be a Explorer or Networker for a period of time.
Nights Away: number of nights away, min number of camping nights
IEV activities: complete two items from the different IEV lists

16. International, Environmental & Values
Three themes
Complete one from two different lists at each level
Personal challenge reflecting level of award & personal ability
Two for Platinum CSA
Two more (or four if direct) for Diamond CSA
Two more (or 6 if direct) for QSA
An activity cannot count for this requirement if it is being used for any other requirement of the award
Guidance on level that should be aimed for is outlined in Award requirements on TSA website

17. International • Complete/mentor Explorer Belt.
•    An active part in a project with an overseas aid organisation.
•    An active part in a camp in another country.
•    An active part in an International Camp in the UK in a role other than "Participant".
•    A part in a project at a campsite abroad.
•    Organise a series of 6 evening programmes for your Unit on an international theme.
•    Organise a series of 6 evening programmes for another Section on an international theme.
•    Complete any activity of a similar nature agreed beforehand, and registered with your mentor.
•    Complete the Scouts of the World Award.

18. Environmental
•   Part in an environmental project with another organisation.
•   Active part in an environmental project in your local community. 
•   Choose, research & present a current environmental issue.
•   Complete an environmental impact assessment of an activity the Unit/Network is undertaking and act on your findings.
•   Organise a series of 6 evening programmes for your Unit on an environmental theme.
•   Organise a series of 6 evening programmes for another Section on an environmental theme.
•   Complete any activity of a similar nature agreed beforehand.
•   Complete the Scouts of the World Award.

19. Values Research & present a current issue, such as health or crime.
Organise a series of six evening programmes for your Unit on a Values.
An active part in a project examining your own faith.
An active part in a project examining a faith other than your own.
A regular leading part in activities at your place of worship.
Organise a series of six evening programmes for another section on an values theme.
Complete any activity of a similar nature agreed beforehand.
Complete the Scouts of the World Award.
